OVERVIEW:

The Life Enrichment Specialist creates, implements, and sustains a dynamic program of daily activities that enhances residents’ overall quality of life, incorporating all seven dimensions of wellness: physical, intellectual, spiritual, vocational, environmental, social, and emotional. This role goes beyond traditional “activities,” focusing on meaningful engagement, personal connections, and purpose-driven experiences for each resident.

The Life Enrichment Specialist works closely with the Head of Life Enrichment to ensure programming aligns with best practices, reflects the unique culture of the community, and fosters a sense of belonging, accomplishment, and joy among residents. This position integrates innovative technology platforms to personalize programs, capture resident stories, and measure engagement.

MISSION ALIGNMENT:

Every activity is crafted to inspire purpose, honor individual life stories, and encourage residents to live each day with meaning and fulfillment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Maintain resident confidentiality at all times.
-Review residents’ life histories, preferences, and abilities to plan meaningful, individualized activities.
-Organize and display a monthly calendar with a balanced variety of programs that support all wellness dimensions.
-Schedule a minimum of: Four activities each weekday, three activities each weekend day, One evening program per week and two community outings per month (including arranging transportation and chaperones)
-Plan activities at least one month in advance, submitting the calendar to the Head of Life Enrichment by the 25th of the preceding month.
-Incorporate sensory-based activities, vocational opportunities, and intergenerational programs into regular schedules.

-Arrange for guest speakers, entertainers, and special program facilitators, process invoices for payment.
-Procure and manage activity supplies and submit food requests to the Dining Service Coordinator in a timely manner.
-Actively promote activities by visiting residents (especially new arrivals) and creating enthusiasm for upcoming events.
-Assist residents in getting to and from programs, collaborating with care staff as needed.
-Foster positive relationships with other departments to ensure programming supports each resident’s well-being.
-Conduct regular resident activity planning sessions to gather input and suggestions.
-Meet with new residents upon move-in to learn their interests, introduce the program, and encourage participation.
-Involve local businesses, volunteer groups, and community organizations to enrich programs.
-Decorate for holidays and special events, and assist residents with personal requests such as errands, appointments, or letter writing.
-Keep accurate records of resident participation, preferences, and program impact using designated technology platforms.
-Maintain up-to-date resident activity files, including birthday and anniversary lists, resident council notes, and previous activity calendars.
-Coordinate monthly Resident Council meetings and assist the Council President as needed.
-Communicate planned activities to staff and arrange coverage when unavailable to lead programs.
-Adhere to all safety, infection control, and compliance policies.
-Attend required in-services and maintain a professional, positive, and collaborative demeanor.
-Immediately report any actual or suspected resident abuse or neglect as required by law and company policy.
-Regularly collaborate with the Executive Director/Administrator to review progress, share updates, and align on priorities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

-Plan, coordinate, and execute programs that promote cognitive stimulation, physical activity, creativity, and social engagement.
-Tailor activities to resident care plans, ensuring accessibility and meaningful participation.
-Actively work to reduce isolation and enhance resident connections.
-Partner with care, wellness, and dining teams to integrate health and wellness into programming.
-Recruit, train, and support volunteers to assist with activities and events.
-Organize special events, including theme days, community celebrations, and seasonal gatherings.
-Maintain accurate participation records and activity reports.

-Communicate effectively with residents, families, and staff regarding program offerings and resident engagement.
-Monitor all activities for safety and compliance with resident rights.
-Some communities have a Life Enrichment Assistant in the department requiring Director and LES mentorship, guidance and support in coordinating and carrying out our Life Enrichment department activities, specific duties, and related responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

-High school diploma or GED required; additional education in recreation therapy, social work, gerontology, or related field preferred.
-1–2 years of experience in recreation, life enrichment, or therapeutic activities, preferably
in assisted living or long-term care.
-Strong organizational skills, creativity, and ability to adapt programs to varying abilities.
-Comfortable with technology platforms to manage calendars, track participation, and share program updates.
-Excellent communication skills and a compassionate, resident-centered approach.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Certification as required by state regulations preferred.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL & COGNITIVE ABILITIES:  

-Ability to stand, walk, reach, climb, bend, lift, grasp, push, and pull at a high volume and frequency for long periods of time. 
-Can tolerate bright lights, loud noises, odors, changes in temperature settings -to include cold or hot climates, exposure to infectious/communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, and other disease related environments. 
-Efficiently and effectively manage unpredictable schedules, distractions, changes of pace or priorities, on a regular basis. 
-Fine hand coordination and ability to distinguish smells, tastes, and temperatures. 
-Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively with residents, families, and staff. 
-Ability to remain calm under stress and follow training protocols. 
-Capable of performing heavy and or unstable lifting of 50lbs or greater when necessary. 
-Must be accurate, dependable, and thorough in all assigned tasks. 

AVAILABILITY & EXPECTATIONS:

-Must be available to work weekends, other shifts as staff and census changes demand, and participate in the rotating on-call schedule.
-Remain accessible by phone to respond to urgent matters.
-Maintain a consistent presence in the community during scheduled shifts.
