Position Summary:

The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is responsible for the integrity of Tweet Garot's weld program, including documentation, testing, welder and procedure continuity, and overall weld quality across manufacturing operations. This role reports to the Quality Manager and serves as the technical authority on weld inspection and welder qualification recordkeeping, partnering closely with operations, project management, and engineering.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Own and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ) records
  • Maintain welder qualification continuity logs — tracking certification status, continuity/renewal timing, and re-qualification requirements for all certified welders
  • Document inspection results, non-conformances, and corrective actions; maintain an organized, audit-ready inspection record system
  • Perform visual inspection of welds for size, quality, and conformance to drawings, weld symbols, and applicable specifications
  • Coordinate and/or perform non-destructive examination (NDE) — visual (VT), penetrant (PT), magnetic particle (MT) — or oversee third-party NDE/RT/UT providers as required by project scope
  • Review and interpret weld symbols, drawings, and customer specifications for code and contract compliance; escalate code-applicability questions requiring engineering sign-off
  • Support root-cause investigation of weld defects and recommend corrective and preventive actions to Manufacturing Engineering and shop leadership
  • Partner with the Quality Manager on internal audits and customer/third-party quality audits related to welding
  • Support development and delivery of internal weld training for welders pursuing certification, including entry-level GMAW/ASME Section IX pathways
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering and Design on weldability, joint design, and continuous improvement of weld processes

Preferred Minimum Knowledge, Experience & Skills Requirements:

  • Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification required, OR demonstrated ability and commitment to obtain CWI certification within an agreed timeframe following hire
  • Prior hands-on welding trade experience (structural, pipe, or fabrication welding) strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of welding codes and industry standards relevant to industrial fabrication and process piping (e.g., AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, and applicable ASME B31 piping codes)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, weld symbols, and specifications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable delivering direct, technical feedback to welders, engineers, and leadership
  • Proficiency with documentation, recordkeeping, and quality/ERP systems
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in welding technology, engineering technology, or related field a plus
  • Sensitivity to confidential customer, quality, and project information
