Job Summary
The Small Animal Community Practice Veterinary Technician will provide hands-on patient care and support to faculty veterinarians, interns, and veterinary students. The role includes direct animal care, clinical support, and teaching assistance, and client communication. This position is ideal for a technician who enjoys working in a dynamic, team-oriented teaching hospital environment and who values mentorship and professional development.
Essential Job Duties
- Provide daily care, handling and monitoring of animals in the small animal services of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH ).
- Assist faculty in routine and specialized procedures (physical exams, diagnostic sample collection, medication administration, anesthesia monitoring, pain management, CPR, specialty procedures, etc.).
- Support veterinary students and small animal interns by teaching and demonstrating technical skills (medication administration, IV catheter placement, fluid therapy, bandaging, patient monitoring, etc.).
- Manage patient schedules, inventory, and medical records to ensure smooth operation of the Community Practice/shelter medicine service.
- Assist and support assigned service and other services as time/resources allow.
- Maintain all equipment in the community practice and shelter medicine areas of the VTH.
- Manage and monitor hospitalized patients.
- Maintain cleanliness, safety, and compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards (AAHA, IACUC, USDA, OSHA, AVMA-COE).
- Participate in academic rounds and contribute to the teaching and mentorship of future veterinarians and small animal rotating interns.
- Provide client communication and discharge education as needed.
Perform all other duties as assigned by the Dean, Department Head, VT H Director or Section Chief.
Qualifications (Education, Experience and Specialized Training)
- Graduate of an accredited veterinary technology program (or equivalent).
- Licensed, or eligible for licensure, in the state of Alabama.
At least one year of veterinary practice or academic veterinary technician experience required.
Physical Demands
- Ability to operate standard office equipment
- Ability to walk short distances
- Ability to lift and carry parcels, packages and other items
- Ability to view a computer terminal
