Job Summary
The Small Animal Surgery Veterinary Technician will provide hands-on patient care and support to faculty veterinarians, interns, and veterinary students. The person in this role will assist with or perform routine procedures as directed by their faculty veterinarian supervisor and will maintain the surgical suites and equipment. Providing or assisting with patient care and monitoring is required throughout the year including weekends, after-hours and assigned holidays. Support of the small animal surgical services through efficient and clear communication with other VMTH services is expected.
Essential Job Duties
- Maintain cleanliness and safety in surgical suites, ward, surgery prep room, and other areas as designated at the start of the day and after each surgical procedure.
- Maintain adequate supplies, medications, etc. at all times in the surgical areas and prompt removal and replacement of expired supplies/medications.
- Assist and support assigned service and other services as time/resources allows.
- Manage and monitor all surgery patients.
- Ensure sterile packs/instruments/supplies are available and organized ahead of time for all surgical cases through direct communication with central supply.
- Verify all needs for all surgical areas — dentistry, endoscopy and surgery suites at the start of the day.
- Maintain all equipment/instruments in the surgical suites, prep room, ward and associated areas.
- Maintain an accurate daily hospital census, travel sheets, and whiteboard items.
- Maintain a daily log/input into electronic medical record all medications and supplies to be administered to patients.
- Place IV catheters, administer medications (IV, 1M, SC), collect blood and urine samples, provide first-aid to patients under indirect faculty veterinarian supervision.
- Participate in academic rounds.
- Assist in the instructional process for students rotating through Small Animal Surgery Service.
- Assist in teaching students/interns (e.g., techniques, medication, injections, bandaging, blood collection/administration, fluid administration, and nursing care.
- Assist/supervise anesthesia patient monitoring, pain management protocols, nursing care, specialty procedures (endoscopies, diagnostic imaging assisted procedures, emergency stabilization, CPR, etc.).
- Walk, feed, provide humane restraint, bathe or otherwise provide assigned care for surgical cases housed in the VMTH.
- Assist in teaching patient monitoring, pain management protocols and post-surgical care for the owner. Assist in preparing for and participating in inspections (AAHA, IACUC, USDA, OSHA, AVMA-COE, etc.).
Qualifications (Education, Experience and Specialized Training)
- Must be a graduate of an accredited veterinary medical technology program or equivalent and eligible for licensure in the State of Alabama.
- Must have at least I year experience in a veterinary practice or veterinary/veterinary technician academic environment. Experience working in a veterinary surgical facility and familiarity with veterinary surgical equipment/instruments would be ideal.
