POSITION: Maintenance Technician

DEPARTMENT: Facilities

SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the maintenance and operations of the district buildings, systems and grounds. This person’s goal is to maintain an environment that will enable students to be effectively taught.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduate from high school or GED, preferably supplemented by technical training in addition to experience and a comprehensive working knowledge of maintenance operations and procedures including current preventative and predictive competencies. Relevant certifications will be given special consideration.

Must meet all federal, state and local employee requirements.

REPORTABILITY: Reportable to the Director

SUPERVISION: None

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Director in accordance with provisions of the applicable policies of the Tuscarora School District.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain the efficient operation of all facilities and grounds of the school system as assigned. Maintain and repair facilities as needed.
  • Assure that proper tools and equipment are available for performing the required jobs and informing the Maintenance Supervisor when these are lacking.
  • Make direct repairs, installation, and preventative maintenance, especially in the field in which the skill training has been received.
  • Insure an adequate program of preventative maintenance and be aware of hazardous conditions and either eliminate these conditions or report them to the Maintenance Supervisor
  • Assist with the daily maintenance and operations of the district buildings, systems and grounds.
  • Assumes any other responsibilities as assigned by the Director and the Superintendent or his/her designee.

JOB DUTIES

Provide the Tuscarora School District with the knowledge and skills necessary to:

  • Repair, clean, troubleshoot and maintain boilers, burners, and steam traps.
  • Repair, clean, troubleshoot and maintain pneumatic controls on air compressors, thennostats, valves, and dampers.
  • Repair, clean, troubleshoot and maintain kitchen equipment, such as dishwashers, steam kettles, pressure coolers, etc.
  • Install and perform maintenance on water closets, urinals, sinks, and vanities, water heaters and dishwashers.
  • Cuts opening in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fitting using hand tools and power tools.
  • Cut and thread pipe, using pipe cutters, cutting torch and pipe threading machine.
  • Bends pipe to required angle by use of pipe-bending machine.
  • Assembles and installs valves, pipe fitting and pipe composed of metal, such as iron, steel, brass, copper and non-metals such as plastic.
  • Connects tubing and fitting using solder plastic or solder and torch.
  • Fills pipe systems with water or air and reads pressure gauges to determine leaks in system.
  • Repair and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets and urinals, mending burst pipes and opening clogged drains.
  • Maintain vehicle logs on the vehicle assigned to his care.
  • Assist with snow removal.

(General Requirement) A Skilled mechanic who is familiar with boilers, pneumatic systems, electric systems, installation of phones, phone lines and computer hook-ups. Capable of performing installations and repairs requiring the use of instructions and uncomplicated blueprints. Requires minimum checking and supervision. Work is of high quality, also exercises initiative. Willing to attend training programs to enhance personal knowledge and capability to perform district functions. Is willing to perform other duties as assigned.

Plumbing:

  • Unclog drains
  • Replace seats and washers
  • Rebuild basic units
  • Solder and glue existing plumbing
  • Install new minor plumbing as required

Electrical:

  • Install receptacles switches
  • Run conduit
  • Change ballasts
  • Develop trouble shooting techniques Carpentry:
  • Replace deteriorated components
  • Construct basic equipment for temporary use

Heating and Air Conditioning:

  • Understand basic pneumatic systems
  • Be able to perform preventive maintenance as required
  • Replace motors
  • Replace fans

Athletic Fields:

  • Lay out fields
  • Paint Fields
  • Set up and tear down for games
  • Groom fields

Windows:

  • Replace glass in windows
  • Replace glass in doors
  • Measure and order replacement glass as required

Doors:

  • Adjust door closers
  • Replace door closers
  • Adjust hinges

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

Physical Demands

  • Standing for limited periods of time.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, grasping.
  • Moderate lifting from 15 to 90 pounds.
  • Some carrying - up to 90 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity to use tools and maintenance equipment.

Sensory Abilities

  • Visual acuity to read maintenance instructions and correspondences, computer screen, etc.
  • Auditory acuity to be able to hear equipment running and to use telephones and radios for communication.
  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly.

  • Position holder has relatively unrestricted access to all building areas within the Tuscarora School District and must be trustworthy.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Employee must attain an Act 34 Criminal History Background Check, Act 151 Child Abuse History Clearance, Act 168 and Federal Criminal History Record every 60 months. Must obtain a physical examination and possess a valid driver's license. In other respects, the successful candidate must be eligible for employment according to the provisions contained in Section 1209 of the Public School Code of 1949, as amended.
