The CLC Medical Director is responsible for the overall medical care delivered to CLC residents at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
    [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
    (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
    Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience:
  • Board Certification in Geriatrics but will also consider Internal Medicine and Family Medicine.

Responsibilities:

Recruitment/Relocation Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): Authorized

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting

The CLC Medical Director will provide professional patient care approximately 60% of the time and administrative duties 40% of the time. The duties and responsibilities of the CLC Medical Director include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Providing leadership in the GEC Service aimed at achieving GEC program goals and objectives and the mission and vision of the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center.
  • Assuming a leadership role in the development and implementation of performance improvement plans affecting the CLC.
  • Collaborating and effectively communicating with members of the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team.
  • Providing clinical input and oversight for all patient treatment plans.
  • Being readily available to the other team members for collaboration when medical or other problems arise.
  • Attending Interdisciplinary Treatment Team meetings weekly and collaborating with the team in ensuring each resident's care plan is individualized and accurate.
  • Participating in monthly Medical Staff meetings as required.
  • Participating in regular GEC Provider staff meetings as required.
  • Leading regular CLC Provider staff meetings.
  • Participating in monthly VISN or VHA calls pertaining to CLC, as appropriate.
  • Participating in quality management activities such as medial records reviews, Drug Utilization Evaluations, Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Peer Reviews at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center.
  • Serving on facility committees when appropriate.
  • Working to meet performance measures set by the facility, VISN or VHA.
  • Entering all leave requests (except for unexpected sick leave) in VATAS and seeking approval from the supervisor or approving official prior to going on leave.
  • Completing, signing and releasing notes promptly and accurately using the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) or current VHA electronic health record system.
  • Addressing CPRS clinical alerts in a timely manner.
  • Forwarding CPRS clinical alerts to another provider and generally securing coverage for his/her/their assigned residents before going on leave.
  • Supervising APNs to co-manage the care of their assigned residents and/or the residents on their assigned CLC neighborhood(s).
  • Identifying the residents' medical problems and maintain an accurate problem list.
  • Determining the need for consultation from medical, surgical and/or psychiatric subspecialties.
  • Diagnosing and managing minor trauma, including suturing, if appropriate.
  • Determining the need for, and facilitating, admissions to or discharges from an acute care hospital in collaboration with other providers.
  • Ensuring proper hand-off of all transfers to outside facilities (VA or Non-VA) by having personal contact with accepting provider (i.e. talking to the accepting provider and documenting such contact in the medical record).
  • Ensuring proper hand-off when transferring patients from one CLC neighborhood to another or from the CLC to other Tuscaloosa VA programs, by talking to the receiving provider prior to transfer.
  • Ensuring that the transfer note is completed on the same day.
  • Completing medication reconciliation on all admissions and discharges.
  • Ensuring that all admission H&Ps and discharge summaries are fully detailed.
  • Performing either an admission H&P within 72 hours of admission (for long stay) or within 24 hours of admission (for short stay) OR a comprehensive assessment within 30 days of admission (if an APN performed the H&P) for all new CLC residents.
  • Ensuring that a comprehensive assessment (GEC Provider Reassessment note) is performed every 60 days for every resident. The responsibility of these comprehensive assessments may alternate between the APN and the attending physician.
  • Performing death pronouncements and electronically completing and signing death certificates.
  • Responding to all medical emergencies that may occur in the CLC during normal business hours.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM (subject to change based on agency needs)
