What are the responsibilities and job description for the Counselor position at Turning Point Advocacy Services?
Summary: The Therapist is responsible for providing individual and group counseling sessions to assist survivors of domestic and sexual violence develop their own coping skills to heal from trauma in the wake of the violence and abuse.
The guiding principles of this position are defined within the framework of woman-defined advocacy and respect for the individual woman’s needs and goals.
This position reports directly to the Senior Programs Director.
Counseling Responsibilities:
· Meet in individual and group sessions with survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence;
· Assist survivors with developing goals for counseling;
· Assist survivors with identifying means of increasing coping skills and of healing from abuse and violence;
· Assist survivors with identifying methods for finding emotional peace for future happiness;
· Coordinate counseling services with other staff members as needed;
General Responsibilities:
· Maintains case files, progress notes, actions plans and follow-up plans;
· Provide statistical information as required;
· Protects client/survivor and staff and shelter location confidentiality as per MO Revised Statute 455.220.
· Perform other duties as required and requested.
Qualifications:
· Sensitivity to and understanding of the dynamics of domestic and sexual violence;
· An understanding of woman-defined advocacy;
· At least one year of experience working with survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence, preferably within the emergency domestic violence shelter system;
· Ability to work with people of diverse characteristics including, but not limited to, a variety of ethnic, racial, religious and socio-economic backgrounds and nontraditional sexual orientations and gender identities;
· The capacity to remain calm and patient under stressful conditions;
· A valid and current Missouri Driver’s License and insurance;
· Strong interpersonal skills;
· Ability to supervise within a positive framework
· Master’s Degree in Counseling;Licensed in counseling in the state of Missouri. Will consider strong candidate who is currently being supervised by a licensed Counselor.
Pay: $28.00 - $32.00 per hour
Expected hours: 30.0 per week
