We are currently seeking experienced Underground OSP Construction Technicians to support fiber optic and telecommunications infrastructure projects throughout the Sacramento, California market.
This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with experience in underground utility construction, fiber optic installation, directional boring, conduit placement, telecommunications construction, excavation, utility locating, and broadband infrastructure projects.
Position Summary
The Underground OSP Construction Technician will perform a variety of construction, installation, maintenance, and restoration activities related to underground fiber optic and telecommunications infrastructure. Technicians will support new network builds, fiber deployments, utility relocations, network expansions, and broadband construction projects throughout the Sacramento region.
The ideal candidate will possess hands-on experience with underground utility construction, telecommunications infrastructure, directional drilling support, conduit installation, and fiber optic network construction.
Primary ResponsibilitiesUnderground Construction
- Assist with trenching, excavation, conduit installation, and restoration activities
- Install underground telecommunications and fiber optic infrastructure
- Perform hand digging using shovels and mechanical excavation tools
- Support directional boring and Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) operations
- Locate and identify underground utilities before excavation activities
- Place conduit, vaults, handholes, pull boxes, and related underground infrastructure
- Install innerduct, pull tape, fiber optic cable, and telecommunications facilities
- Support cable placement, pulling, and underground fiber deployments
- Assist with restoration of customer property, sidewalks, landscaping, and work areas
General Construction Duties
- Load, unload, transport, and stage construction materials and equipment
- Operate around heavy equipment including excavators, loaders, trenchers, directional drills, vacuum excavation units, and utility vehicles
- Perform site preparation, cleanup, and restoration activities
- Read and interpret utility maps, construction drawings, and work orders
- Maintain visual and verbal communication with crew members to ensure safe operations
- Follow all company, customer, OSHA, and local safety requirements
- Complete daily reports, safety documentation, and project records
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year of telecommunications, utility, underground construction, or fiber optic construction experience
- Experience with underground OSP construction projects
- Knowledge of underground utility construction practices
- Understanding of fiber optic networks and telecommunications infrastructure
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Strong work ethic and ability to work effectively within a team environment
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
- Ability to pass background screening and drug testing
- Authorization to work in the United States
Preferred Qualifications
- Fiber optic construction experience
- Directional boring or HDD experience
- Utility locating experience
- Excavation and trenching experience
- Fiber placement and cable pulling experience
- Fiber splicing experience
- CDL License
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification
- Telecommunications construction certifications
- Experience reading utility prints, construction drawings, and utility maps
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work 8 to 10 hours per day and overtime as needed
- Ability to work weekends, emergency response assignments, and on-call schedules when required
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and lifting
- Ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds with assistance
- Ability to work in confined spaces, trenches, and excavation environments
- Ability to wear required PPE including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility apparel, and safety footwear
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, rain, and dust
