POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Teacher/Reading Specialist
FLSA: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Principal
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 210 days
SUPERVISES: N/A
QUALIFICATIONS: Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Teacher License and a Reading Specialist endorsement, and LETRS training preferred
FOCUS: Provide coaching and intervention supports using evidence-based reading strategies.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the science of reading, VALLS, LETRS, and effective reading strategies to plan evidence-based instruction and supplemental interventions for students who fall behind literacy benchmarks on screeners such as VALLS (Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System).
- Plan, write, and implement lesson plans with evidence-based instructional strategies focused on the Virginia Standards of Learning and the Division curriculum.
- Demonstrate flexibility in instructional delivery and engage students in differentiated learning experiences.
- Diagnose and evaluate students’ abilities and progress in a timely and consistent manner, and provide progress reports as required.
- Administer formative and summative assessments to monitor progress, adjust instruction, and plan individual and/or small-group Tier II and Tier III interventions to meet the needs of students.
- Analyze, disaggregate, and communicate data results to all stakeholders directly involved in the direct instruction and remediation of students.
- Collaborate with families and classroom teachers to create reading plans to provide individualized interventions for struggling readers to ensure all students are reading at grade level by third grade.
- Track students’ literacy goals and adjust interventions based on real-time data.
- Utilize effective classroom management techniques to maximize instructional time.
- Refer students to specialists when exceptionalities are detected or suspected.
- Create a nurturing, organized, and safe classroom environment.
- Communicate professionally with parents, guardians, and colleagues to create cooperative and collaborative relationships to support students’ academic growth and success.
- Use discretion to protect the confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties.
- Attend all events directly related to the job requirements with parental involvement.
- Continue to grow professionally through collaboration with colleagues and participation in professional development activities.
- Participate in curriculum development as appropriate to the assignment.
- Implement Division initiatives with fidelity.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Demonstrate proficiency in Word, Excel, and basic computer skills for effective data and record-keeping and communication.
- Abide by State statutes, School Board policies, and regulations.
- Attend meetings and perform duties as assigned by administrators or supervisors.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, Division policy, and administrative regulations.
- Serve on school and Division committees as assigned.
- Remain current on instructional practices in education and instructional technology.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
