Your Pay Structure (FLSA Status): Part-time, hourly/nonexempt

Safety Sensitive: This is a safety-sensitive position. Regardless of whether you are a medical marijuana licensee, you must receive a negative result on a 10-panel, pre-placement drug screening to include THC, prior to beginning work.

Your Job

This role is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of zoo trains, conducting safety checks, performing routine maintenance, and delivering the highest level of guest service at all points of contact. Train Engineers must be able to work independently, easily engage with the public, and adhere to stringent safety standards.

Your Essential Responsibilities

  • Operate zoo trains, track switches, whistles, regular brakes and emergency brakes, and offer a short speech while maintaining awareness of surrounding areas and guest activity to ensure passenger and guest safety
  • Conduct daily inspection of train before operating in accordance with TZMI Safety and Operations department standards
  • Understand how all crossings arms, bells, and lights function and report any issues to supervisor
  • Accurately judge speed and distance of moving objects
  • Via radio communication, maintain awareness of the location of each train when more than one is operating, notifying the other Train Engineer at each stop and departure
  • Inspect the condition of the train and equipment in movement and while stationary
  • Report any and all mechanical problems to supervisors immediately
  • Troubleshoot and assist with minor train and railroad maintenance
  • Write legibly to complete routine reports and other company documents
  • Conduct and submit safety inspections using digital devices
  • Effectively communicate and demonstrate interpersonal skills with all levels of employees in a clear and professional manner
  • Collaborate with all zoo departments and consider events, construction areas, or any other factor that may affect train paths
  • Monitor zoo radio to learn of emergencies or times when train operation must halt
  • Complete laps around the zoo each morning before the zoo opens to ensure train and track safety
  • Maintain cleanliness of train stations
  • Assist passengers getting on and off the trains when needed, frequently lifting items such as strollers and wheelchairs onto the train for transport. Ensure passengers in ADA-compliant coach are properly latched
  • Demonstrate and adhere to TZMI’s workplace values
  • Know and follow zoo policies and procedures, including emergency protocols

What We Expect

Required Qualifications, Education And/or Experience

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and have been licensed to drive for at least one year.
  • Must have a driving record free of any infractions for the past 7 years.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must successfully complete TZMI Train Engineer training program followed by a proficiency exam and evaluations.
  • Must have 20/40 vision in both eyes with or without corrective lenses, and a field of vision of at least 70 degrees in each eye. Must have the ability to recognize different colors of traffic signals.
  • Must be able to work weekends and evenings
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other TZMI employees.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money.
  • Ability to log in and complete daily digital tasks using smart phone or tablet
