Position Summary:
The Skilled Trades Lab Instructor supports hands-on training in HVAC, Electrical, and Mechatronics programs by ensuring lab environments are safe, organized, and fully equipped. This is a support position that works under the guidance of instructors and project manager(s). The Lab Instructor helps prepare lab materials, assists students during technical practice, and maintains tools and equipment to facilitate effective learning. This role does not include supervisory responsibilities or independent policy-making but plays a vital part in supporting student success and program operations.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare lab stations, tools, and equipment prior to each training session.
- Provide students with hands-on support during labs under the direction of lead instructors.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, including PPE use and proper handling of tools/materials.
- Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting of lab equipment.
- Track, organize, and replenish supplies, consumables, and instructional materials.
- Maintain clean, safe, and functional lab spaces at all times.
- Assist instructors and project managers with special projects and program needs.
- Follow all institutional policies and procedures, including timekeeping and reporting requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support program and operational needs.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical diploma or associate’s degree preferred in HVAC, Electrical, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- 1–2 years of hands-on experience in a skilled trade environment (lab, field, or training setting).
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work with tools, equipment, and technology.
- Excellent teamwork, communication, and organizational skills.
- Commitment to student success and maintaining a safe learning environment.
People Responsibilities:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Physical Environment:
- Work performed primarily in training labs with regular exposure to tools, equipment, and safety gear.
- Frequent standing, bending, and lifting up to 25 lbs., including moving tools and equipment.
- Some stooping, twisting, and reaching required.
- Occasional travel to partner sites may be required.
