Tulare County Office of Education JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (9349) Job Summary: The job of Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant is done for the purpose/s of providing therapy services for designated pupils under the direction of a registered Occupational Therapist and the Special Services Division as a member of the education team in accordance with the Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals and objectives. The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant may, with prior approval, adjust specific treatment procedure in accordance with changes in student status. Employees in this classification receive limited supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job classification performs a variety of activities essential to student performance in sensory processing, organization and integration, motor planning and coordination, fine motor abilities, and self-help judgment. This job classification requires that employees meet national and state practices codes and standards, as well as professional training and certification requirements. Essential Functions: -Adapts school and classroom environment, tools and materials under the supervision of the school occupational therapist for the purpose of improving student function and facilitating student access to curricular and instructional activities. -Assists the occupational therapist for the purpose of identifying student abilities and skill levels in oral motor, sensory regulation and processing, motor planning, activities of daily living, fine motor function and postural stability. -Assists the occupational therapist with the development of the occupational therapy plan for the purpose of fulfilling the goals of the IEP. -Attends IEP meetings and staff meetings for the purpose of reporting findings and recommendations. -Completes Medi-Cal billing for the purpose of documenting and requesting reimbursement of services delivered to students from Medi-Cal. -Documents/maintains occupational therapy records noting reaction and response to therapy treatment keeping accurate records of therapy for the purpose of documenting student progress. -Follows Tulare COE policies and procedures relating to special education for the purpose of program compliance. -Implements home programs for the purpose of providing instruction for students and families. -Monitors the use of adaptive equipment and other assistive technologies for the purpose of therapy intervention. -Provides assistance to educational staff for the purpose of consulting, training, and directing individual or group activities. -Provides educationally-related occupational therapy services for designated students for the purpose of fulfilling the goals of the IEP. Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Skills to: •design and fit adaptive devices. Knowledge of: •current methodology and practices including sensory integration, neuro-developmental treatment, oral motor and functional self-help skills; •a variety of current treatment approaches appropriate to meet student needs, instructional goals and classroom support; •Guidelines Code of Ethics: Occupational Therapy Standards of Practice, Practice Act, along with appropriate treatment implementation; •functioning of adaptive equipment, assistive technology, and special equipment; Ability to: •communicate effectively, orally, and in writing; •assist with standardized assessments; •work with all levels of district staff, parents and health care professionals; •lift and move moderately heavy objects and assist in student positioning; •plan and organize work; •meet schedules and timelines; •maintain accurate records. Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision; leading, guiding and/or coordinating other persons; and operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines. Utilization of significant resources from other work units is routinely required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services. The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking and 40% standing Experience Required: Job Related Experience within Specialized Field is required. Education Required: Community College and/or Vocational School Degree with study in job related area. Certificates, Licenses, Clearances, Testing and/or Bonding Required: Valid California Driver's License and proof of automobile insurance. Occupational Therapy Assistant Certificate. Department of Justice and FBI Fingerprint Response.
