Distinguishing Characteristics: 

Under minimal supervision and administrative direction, performs a variety of moderately complex to advanced mechanical maintenance on a diverse fleet of vehicles and specialized equipment, including public safety vehicles and equipment (Police and Fire) assets for Tucson Airport Authority (TAA) at Tucson International Airport (TUS) and Ryan Airfield (RYN); handle the priority repair of fleet assets dedicated to support Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Part 139); all mechanical repair(s) shall conform to applicable rules, regulations and standards.

 

Essential Functions:  

The following functions and all other functions not included in this job description are to be performed in the best interests and for the greater good of TAA.

 

  • Support and advocate for TAA’s Mission, Vision, Guiding Principles and act as a champion and role-model of TAA’s Cultural Fundamentals.
  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance repairs on a diverse fleet of automotive and specialized equipment, including gas, diesel, alternative fuel equipment, and fire apparatus, in a timely, efficient and cost-effective manner. 
  • Perform routine vehicle and equipment preventive and predictive maintenance inspections, checks and replaces fluids, checks lights, tunes and performs repairs to gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Inspect, diagnose, replace, realign, adjusts and/or repairs drive train, suspension, and brake systems of vehicles and equipment; repairs water and fuel pumps, air conditioning system components, cooling systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, exhaust systems and components, and/or repairs malfunctions to all vehicle or equipment systems.
  • Test drive vehicles and equipment for trouble shooting analysis.
  • Perform timely repairs to Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) apparatus and equipment; test drive and operate crash, fire, rescue and structural firefighting apparatus to ensure operational readiness; maintain firefighting systems, fire rescue equipment saws, hydraulic forcing tools and power plant generators; ensure work conforms to Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) standards.  
  • Weld and fabricate metal as required.
  • Operate many types of mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Maintain work records in accordance with Department policies.
  • Schedule appointments for warranty work with vendors.
  • Ensure when performing jobs that all required materials and supplies are obtained to complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Research, locate, price and submit appropriate information regarding the purchase of necessary parts and tools.
  • Ensure that hazardous materials are used or disposed of in accordance with environmental health and safety standards. 
  • Must maintain all TAA owned or leased tools in a clean and proper manner.
  • Be responsive to airport emergencies and situations that may involve loss of human life or property; support public safety and operational response to emergencies; utilize Incident Management System (ICS)/National Incident Management System (NIMS) protocols and procedures; coordinate and/or participate in after-action emergency de-briefing with appropriate departments and stakeholders.

 

The above listed functions are not necessarily all the essential functions.  Job duties and functions may be expanded or reduced by management based on future changing needs and job requirements.

Qualifications:

Position Requirements: 

Must have a high school diploma or equivalency, a minimum of two years advanced mechanical work experience, and completed technical training course on gas, diesel, and alternative fueled equipment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Diagnostics and how to repair hydraulic systems, transmissions, centrifugal and positive displacement pumps and specialized firefighting systems.     
  • Vehicle air-conditioning equipment.
  • Technical wiring, sheet metal, machine shop, and welding helpful, but not required.
  • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Part 139, as it pertains to ARFF apparatus and equipment.

Skill in:

  • Organization, oral, listening, and written communications, proof-readingcritical-thinking and multi-tasking.
  • Taking initiative and being a self-starter. 
  • Self-motivation and taking initiative to complete quality work that furthers the mission and goals of the department and TAA.

Ability to:

Environmental Requirements

  • Work in a high noise environment; work in garage environment with fumes and other chemicals.
  • Work in inclement weather (wind, rain, heat).

Physical Requirements

  • Distinguish colors by a practical test and identify fuel grade color code markings, and actual samples of various fuels.
  • Work in tight spaces/places.
  • Operate any airport vehicle or equipment, whether standard or automatic, pick-up trucks and forklifts, cherry pickers, and other necessary equipment.

Mental Requirements

  • Read and understand technical manuals, repair manuals, schematic drawings, wiring diagrams, Safety Data Sheets regarding chemical substances; training documents, safety related information, and supply lists.
  • Function within a work prioritization system.
  • Perform tasks with a high degree of accuracy, attention to detail, with mature judgment, to function in compelling, high stress, fast moving work surroundings, with deadlines.

        General

  • Work any assigned shift on a rotational basis, including evenings/weekends/holidays, subject to overtime and on call, as required.
  • Use a computer utilizing Microsoft Office software and other office machines.
  • Initiate and organize responsibilities without observant supervision and take independent action relative to work problems requiring immediate solutions.  
  • Understand that dissemination of information outside of job requirements is based on “need-to-know” and must maintain discreet and professional sense of confidentiality due to sensitive nature of job functions.
  • Be sensitive and aware of actions and reactions of employees and inform supervisor of appropriate concerns, as necessary.
  • Continually learn and apply the latest up-to-date technical knowledge and skills in functional area of responsibility.  

 

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

  • Valid Arizona driver’s license. 
  • Obtain and maintain the ability to drive airport vehicles and obtain authorization to access the Non-Movement Area. 
  • Must obtain and maintain access to the Security Identification Display Area (SIDA).
  • Obtain Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with manual transmission and air brake endorsements within 12 months of employment. 
  • Must obtain and maintain necessary Freon certification within 3 months of employment.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)
    • ASE Medium and Heavy Truck - T2 Heavy-Duty Truck, Diesel Engines.  T4 Heavy-Duty Truck, Brakes and T6 Heavy-Duty Truck, Electrical Systems within one year of employment.  
      • T3 Heavy-Duty Truck Drive Train, T5 Heavy-Duty Truck Suspension and Steering and T7 Heavy-Duty Truck, Heating and Air Conditioning within two years. Master’s level and Advanced level (ASE L2) is preferred. 
    • ASE Automotive - A1 Engine Repair, A2 Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Manual Drive Train and Axles, A4 Suspension and Steering within one (1) year of employment.  A5 Brakes, Electrical/Electronic Systems and A7 Heating and Air Conditioning within three years of employment.  
      • Master’s level and Advanced level (ASE L1) is preferred.
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification (EVT) – Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF apparatus - includes a combination of ASE tests and NFPA equipment standards).  
      • Level I within two years of employment.
      • Level II within three years of employment.
      • Master Level within four years of employment is desired.
  • Structural EVT (ARFF apparatus; includes a combination of ASE tests and NFPA equipment standards) 
      • Level 1 within two years of employment.
      • Level 2 within three years of employment.
  • Must successfully complete the National Incident Management (NIMS) 100, 200, 700, and 800 certification(s) within one year of employment.
  • As an employee, you are deemed to be essential personnel as part of TAA’s emergency response and must respond to airport incidents as requested/required.

 

Salary : $53,619 - $82,349
