The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy machinery to support underground utility installation projects. This role involves excavation, trenching, backfilling, and grading activities in and around existing utilities. The ideal candidate has solid field experience, a strong understanding of trench safety, and the ability to work effectively in dynamic jobsite conditions.
Responsibilities:
Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders, backhoes, and compactors in the installation of underground utilities.
Excavate trenches to required depth, slope, and alignment based on blueprints and grade stakes.
Safely work around existing utility lines using proper spotting and digging practices.
Support crews with pipe placement, bedding, backfill, and compaction.
Perform daily pre-trip inspections and minor maintenance (fueling, greasing, fluid checks).
Communicate effectively with ground personnel, spotters, and supervisors.
Follow all safety procedures, including confined space and trench protection protocols.
Maintain accurate logs of work performed, equipment condition, and production progress.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required.
3–5 years of heavy equipment operating experience in underground utility or civil construction.
Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred.
Knowledge of OSHA excavation and trenching safety standards.
Ability to read blueprints, grade sheets, and cut sheets.
Excellent awareness of surroundings and ability to coordinate with ground personnel.
Preferred Skills:
GPS- or laser-guided excavation experience.
Familiarity with pipe lasers and grade control systems.
Strong mechanical aptitude for basic troubleshooting.
Team-oriented and able to follow direction with minimal supervision.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit, stand, and operate machinery for long periods.
Lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Work in outdoor conditions including heat, cold, and uneven terrain.
Work Environment:
This position operates primarily outdoors on active construction sites. The role requires working in proximity to moving equipment, trenches, and utilities. Strict adherence to safety standards and PPE use is mandatory.
