About the Role:

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a vital role in providing compassionate and individualized care to people with developmental disabilities or other support needs. This position focuses on enhancing the quality of life for clients by assisting with daily living activities, promoting independence, and supporting community integration. The DSP works closely with clients to understand their unique preferences, goals, and challenges, ensuring that care plans are followed and adjusted as needed. This role requires a commitment to fostering a safe, respectful, and empowering environment where clients can thrive. Ultimately, the DSP contributes to the overall well-being and personal growth of those they support, making a meaningful difference in their lives.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (if required for community-based support).
  • Ability to pass background checks and any required health screenings.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to follow detailed care plans.
  • Demonstrated patience, empathy, and commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working as a Direct Support Professional or in a related caregiving role.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Training or coursework related to developmental disabilities or behavioral health.
  • Familiarity with electronic documentation systems.
  • Bilingual abilities to support diverse client populations.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist clients with activities of daily living such as personal hygiene, meal preparation, medication reminders, and mobility support.
  • Implement individualized care plans and document progress, changes, and any incidents accurately and timely.
  • Support clients in developing social, recreational, and vocational skills to promote community involvement and independence.
  • Maintain a safe and clean living environment while adhering to health and safety regulations.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals, family members, and other team members to ensure comprehensive care and support.

Skills:

The required skills such as effective communication and empathy are essential for building trust and understanding with clients, enabling the DSP to provide personalized support. Attention to detail and organizational skills are used daily to accurately follow and document care plans, ensuring client safety and compliance with regulations. Problem-solving skills help the DSP adapt to changing client needs and unexpected situations in a calm and professional manner. Preferred skills like CPR certification and experience with electronic documentation enhance the DSP’s ability to respond to emergencies and maintain thorough records efficiently.
