SUMMARY
The Boiler Tender is a full performance-level position responsible for the independent operation, monitoring, and maintenance of boiler and chiller plant systems that produce steam and high-temperature water for facility operations at Fort Leonard Wood. This position requires demonstrated competency in boiler plant operations and the ability to ensure safe, efficient, and continuous system performance in accordance with regulatory requirements and company standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Boiler Tender performs the following duties independently:
- Operate, monitor, and tend one or more boilers used to generate steam or high-temperature water.
- Monitor and log centrifugal chillers readings.
- Perform boiler startup, shutdown, and firing procedures in accordance with established protocols.
- Observe, interpret, and respond to readings from gauges, meters, charts, and computerized control systems.
- Adjust operational controls to maintain safe, efficient, and continuous plant operations.
- Maintain accurate operational logs and documentation of system performance.
- Conduct boiler water testing and treatment, including chemical analysis for acidity, causticity, and alkalinity.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to boiler room and plant equipment.
- Identify abnormal operating conditions and take appropriate corrective action or notify supervision as required.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations, environmental standards, and federal installation requirements.
- Operate company-owned vehicles as required.
- Respond to operational emergencies and off-hour call-ins as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Utilities Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, and/or EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience operating boiler systems or successful completion of a formal apprenticeship, vocational/technical training program, or internal developmental program leading to Boiler Tender.
- Demonstrated ability to independently operate boiler and chiller plant systems.
- Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record and ability to maintain driving privileges.
- Must be qualified to wear a respirator.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required city, county, or state licenses and certifications where applicable.
- Ability to meet access requirements for work on a federal installation.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Must have the ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, managers and staff members.
REASONING ABILITY
Must be able to read and interpret various information to ensure procedures are followed.
