About the Role:

As a Mechanic within the construction industry, you will play a critical role in ensuring the optimal performance and safety of heavy machinery and equipment. Your expertise will directly impact the efficiency and reliability of construction operations by diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining complex mechanical systems. You will be responsible for troubleshooting issues related to diesel engines, braking systems, hydraulics, and fuel systems, ensuring minimal downtime and adherence to safety standards. This role demands a proactive approach to preventative maintenance and the ability to work under pressure in dynamic environments. Ultimately, your work will support the successful completion of construction projects by keeping essential equipment in peak condition.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven experience as a mechanic specializing in diesel engines and heavy construction equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of braking systems, hydraulics, and fuel systems relevant to construction machinery.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic reports.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate service vehicles as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification from a recognized trade or technical school in diesel mechanics or heavy equipment maintenance.
  • Experience working in the construction industry or with equipment in a similar environment.
  • Familiarity with computerized diagnostic equipment and maintenance management software.
  • OSHA safety certification or equivalent training related to construction site safety.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine inspections and maintenance on blasting, painting, and cleaning equipment, including air compressors, hydroblasters, diesel engines, braking systems, and hydraulic components.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair transmissions, differentials, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, injectors, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic systems, pumps and valves.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems using specialized tools and technical manuals and execute effective repairs to restore equipment functionality.
  • Replace or repair worn or damaged parts such as gaskets, fuel system components, and brake assemblies to ensure safety and performance.
  • Collaborate with site supervisors and operators to schedule maintenance activities that minimize operational disruptions.
  • Maintain detailed records of repairs, parts inventory, and maintenance schedules to support compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Operate various power tools in accordance with company and safety policies.
  • Communicate with shop foreman.
  • Wear the personal protective equipment prescribed by posted signs, written instructions and work permits.
  • Understand and adhere to company safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in company safety and training programs.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by management personnel.

The required skills such as expertise in brakes, diesel engines, hydraulics, fuel systems, and gaskets are essential for diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical issues on construction equipment. Daily, you will apply your knowledge of diesel mechanics to maintain engine performance and reliability under demanding conditions. Your understanding of braking and hydraulic systems will ensure that machinery operates safely and efficiently, preventing costly downtime. Additionally, your ability to work with fuel systems and replace gaskets will help maintain optimal engine function and prevent leaks or failures. Preferred skills like familiarity with diagnostic tools and safety certifications will enhance your effectiveness and ensure compliance with industry standards.
