Trueline’s client, a well established Northern California general engineering firm with 70 years of market success, is seeking a Senior Estimator based in the Santa Rosa region (serving Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Solano, Mendocino, Humboldt and the Sacramento region). This full time, onsite role involves leading bid preparation and cost modeling for major heavy civil construction projects—including public works, utilities, paving and earthwork—and presents a strong opportunity to shape strategy, mentor a team and grow professionally.
What You’ll Do as the Senior Estimator:
Lead detailed estimating for heavy civil, public works, underground utilities, earthwork and paving projects
Perform quantity take offs, collaborate with take off specialists and use tools like HCSS HeavyBid (strongly preferred)
Review RFPs, drawings and specs to identify scope, risk factors and cost drivers
Develop cost models including labor, equipment, materials and subcontractor packages
Drive bid schedules and ensure timely, high quality submissions
Partner with business development leadership on early budget stage estimates (private sitework/industrial/commercial)
Build and maintain vendor/subcontractor relationships for accurate pricing and competitive bids
Support go/no go decisions and present estimates to senior leadership
Mentor junior estimators, contribute to process improvement and collaborate across Operations, Project Management and Executive teams
Stay on top of market pricing, industry trends and regional competition
Must Haves as the Senior Estimator:
7 years of estimating experience in heavy civil, public works, Caltrans or general engineering contracting
Demonstrated track record of estimating projects from ~$500K to $40M
Proficiency with HCSS HeavyBid and common take off tools (on screen take off, AGTEK, etc.)
Strong technical knowledge of grading, paving, utilities, earthwork and site development
Experience with both public agency work (municipal/Caltrans) and private industrial/commercial sitework (highly preferred)
Excellent analytical, mathematical and organizational skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to engage confidently with leadership, clients and internal teams
Collaborative, team first mindset
Nice to Haves as the Senior Estimator:
Prior experience estimating bids across the Northern California region
Familiarity with local/regional subcontractor and vendor networks
Exposure to strategic advising (go/no go decisions) or business development support
Experience in mentoring junior team members and developing estimating process standards
