Safety Manager

Truebeck Construction
San Mateo, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 4/18/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/17/2026
Position Summary: The Safety Manager leads project safety planning, start-up, implementation, and continuous improvement for assigned Bay Area projects. This role partners with Operations, Superintendents, trade partners, clients, and safety leadership from preconstruction through turnover to build safe, compliant, and high-performing jobsites aligned with company standards, client expectations, and California regulatory requirements.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

The duties below emphasize strong support during project start-up and sustained field leadership throughout the life of the project.

Project Start-Up and Preconstruction Support

  • Participate in project turnover, preconstruction, logistics, and kick-off meetings to identify high-risk scopes, sequencing constraints, site access issues, occupancy concerns, and operational interfaces before field work begins.
  • Lead development and implementation of the project-specific safety strategy, including start-up planning, site-specific EHS procedures, emergency response protocols, medical response planning, evacuation routes, and required jobsite postings and documentation.
  • Coordinate with project leadership to align safety requirements with site logistics, schedule milestones, temporary facilities, laydown areas, traffic control, public protection, and trade partner mobilization plans.
  • Review and support trade partner safety prequalification, submittals, activity hazard analyses/job hazard analyses, crane and lift plans, excavation and trenching plans, demolition plans, utility shut-down and energization plans, confined space procedures, and other high-risk work plans before work starts.
  • Establish project onboarding expectations for project staff, visitors, and trade partners, including orientation content, badging or access protocols, required training, and communication methods appropriate to the workforce.
  • Verify that project teams are prepared to meet applicable California requirements, client mandates, and company audit expectations before the project enters active construction. Ongoing Project Support and Field Safety Leadership
  • Serve as a visible, field-focused safety leader on assigned project(s) by coaching project teams and trade partners in real time, reinforcing safe behaviors, and helping remove barriers to safe execution.
  • Conduct documented site audits, inspections, and observation tours at the expected frequency; assign corrective actions, track closure, and verify that controls remain effective as project conditions change.
  • Support daily and weekly planning for high-risk work, including excavation, fall protection, crane and hoisting operations, steel erection, scaffold use, temporary power, hot work, material handling, demolition, silica-generating work, and energized or lockout/tagout activities.
  • Partner with the PX, PM, Superintendent, and trade partners to confirm pre-task plans are practical, current, and aligned with site conditions, schedule pressure, and crew competency.
  • Help project teams maintain strong control of changing environmental conditions, including outdoor heat, indoor heat, wildfire smoke, air quality, wind, rain, and other Bay Area jobsite exposures that can affect worker safety and sequencing.
  • Provide safety support through commissioning, punch, turnover, and closeout so that risk management remains strong as the project shifts from major structural work to MEP startup, finishes, owner occupancy, and demobilization. Training, Culture, and Stakeholder Support
  • Facilitate project kick-off meetings, supervisor briefings, toolbox or tailgate support, and topic-specific training sessions on hazards inherent to Truebeck's work.
  • Promote a proactive reporting culture by encouraging early hazard recognition, near-miss reporting, stop-work authority, respectful intervention, and prompt correction of unsafe conditions.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal teams, clients, owners, inspectors, and trade partners; communicate clearly on site expectations, findings, and action items.
  • Support development of project teams by identifying knowledge gaps, coaching field leaders, and escalating training or staffing needs to the Director and Regional Safety leadership when appropriate.
  • Use bilingual, trade-appropriate, and practical communication methods whenever needed to improve understanding and buy-in across the workforce. Incident Response, Compliance, and Continuous Improvement
  • Respond to incidents, significant near misses, property damage events, and client concerns; support scene stabilization, evidence preservation, notifications, investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action follow-through.
  • Support required Cal/OSHA reporting, recordkeeping, and documentation in coordination with company leadership and risk management, including timely escalation of serious incidents.
  • Maintain working knowledge of California construction safety requirements and company procedures, with particular attention to Injury and Illness Prevention Program implementation, heat illness prevention, wildfire smoke, respirable crystalline silica, lead, fall protection, cranes and hoisting, and excavation or trenching controls.
  • Analyze leading and lagging indicators such as observations, corrective action aging, training completion, near misses, incident trends, and project-specific exposures to help influence field decisions and corporate initiatives.
  • Use mobile inspection tools, dashboards, and digital project platforms to document findings, communicate trends, and improve accountability across assigned project locations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of project operations, company initiatives, and client commitments. Skills and Competencies
  • Ability to anticipate and manage risk at both project start-up and active construction phases.
  • Strong working knowledge of commercial construction means, methods, sequencing, and building systems, with the ability to translate that knowledge into practical field controls.
  • Strong presence with project leadership and key field stakeholders; able to influence without relying solely on direct authority.
  • Confident trainer and facilitator with clear verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to prioritize critical issues, manage multiple demands, and remain effective in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Comfort using Microsoft 365, reporting dashboards, and common construction technology platforms such as Procore, Bluebeam, or equivalent tools.
  • Ability to work independently on one large complex project or support multiple smaller projects with consistent responsiveness and follow-through. Knowledge, Education, and Experience
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible construction EHS experience, including leadership on large or complex commercial projects; California experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting multiple project phases, including preconstruction, mobilization, active field operations, tenant improvements, and project closeout.
  • Experience in one or more of the following market sectors preferred: healthcare, higher education, commercial office, life sciences, advanced technology, data center, laboratory, occupied renovation, and self-perform operations.
  • Working knowledge of applicable Cal/OSHA and OSHA standards and the ability to implement them effectively in the field.
  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, construction management, engineering, environmental health and safety, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) certification such as CHST, ASP, GSP, CSP or SMP preferred. In progress applications for these certs and obtainment within 6 months is accepted.
  • OSHA 510 or 5109 Construction required and OSHA 500 or equivalent trainer credentials are a plus.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills are a plus for Bay Area field operations.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This position is primarily performed in active construction environments, including indoor and outdoor settings, and requires regular walking jobsites, climbing stairs or ladders, navigating uneven terrain, and working around moving equipment, noise, dust, and changing weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to wet or humid conditions, temperature extremes, airborne particles, elevated work areas, and other inherent construction hazards. The role also includes office and technology-based work such as report writing, virtual meetings, and data entry. The employee must be able to communicate effectively, use standard office equipment, and occasionally lift or move materials up to 20 pounds. Overtime or schedule flexibility may be required to support project milestones, incident response, or client needs.
