Position Summary
In this role, the Engineering Specialist will support the Engineering department, including costing and lead time estimation for customer RFQs, technical and engineering documentation and instructions, engineering projects and continuous improvement, and efficiency and time studies of existing processes.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities
- Follow safety policies, ensure safety and 5S findings are reported in a timely fashion, and set a good example for safety for the site.
- Prepare quotations for end‑ship SKUs, including comprehensive cost analyses and lead‑time breakdowns for raw materials, external processes, internal production labor, and NRE activities. The Engineering Specialist will present these proposals to TPT Leadership in response to customer RFQs.
- Primary responsibility – 4 hours per day – works with the Sales Teams and Engineering Manager to estimate costs and lead times, including regular follow-up with outside vendors for raw material and 3rd party processing requests. The Engineering Specialist will present each proposal on a weekly cadence (or otherwise directed) and review status, metrics, and next actions for all outstanding requests.
- Following the award of new orders, the Engineering Specialist will coordinate with Supply Chain and Engineering to ensure that engineering materials (tools, fixtures, etc.) are ordered in a timely manner to meet NRE and production schedules, as quoted. The Engineering Specialist will maintain the schedule and status of NPD activities, including additional NPD requests and key milestones, and maintain a visual management tool to communicate status and progress of NPD.
- Interface and coordinate with the integrated product team (IPT – Operations, Materials, Quality and Engineering) to support engineering and technical efforts to ensure that all safety, quality, delivery and cost (SQDC) goals are achieved. The Engineering Specialist prioritizes and collaborates with IPT members to drive the completion of actions assigned by the Engineering Manager to achieve the target completion dates.
- Secondary responsibility – 4 hours per day – works directly with the engineering team on short-term assignments and long-term projects relating to technical documentation, ERP updates (engineering masters), and continuous improvement. The Engineering Specialist will analyze manufacturing processes and customer specifications to create, maintain, review, and revise technical documentation. Technical documentation includes primary (ERP) work instructions and supplemental manufacturing documentation (e.g., work instructions, forms, assembly guides). As a member of the internal Material Review Board (MRB) team, the Engineering Specialist will support by attending daily MRB stand-up meetings and drafting rework instructions as dispositioned, reviewed and approved by the MRB authority.
Experience and Education
- At least 5 years’ direct experience in a production environment supporting Engineering activities, including work instructions, engineering routing and BOMs, fixturing and/or tooling.
- At least 5 years of experience in a fast-paced manufacturing facility – aerospace/defense or production machine shop experience preferred. Very strong attention to detail and accuracy is required for all efforts.
- At least 3 years of experience working with an MRP or ERP system and Microsoft Excel.
- Contracts or commercial experience preferred (proposals, bids, quotes).
Technical Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication required – the Engineering Specialist will create proposals to be reviewed by TPT Leadership. The Engineering Specialist will also frequently interface with members of the IPT team using various means of communication.
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, materials, and supply chain. Processes include machining, deburring, honing, grinding, anodizing, shot peening, penetrant inspection and heat treating.
- Ability to interpret specifications and blueprints, including GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs with strong emphasis on MS Excel.
- Experience in CAD preferred (SolidWorks – Part, Assembly, and Drawing).
