SUMMARY: The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and fabrication work on a fleet of semi-trucks, trailers, and specialized hauling equipment. This includes servicing belt trailers, side dumps, tankers, trailer conveyors, and other heavy-duty transportation equipment. In addition, this role requires the ability to perform mechanical repairs on loaders and other support equipment at ranch sites. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic ensures all equipment remains safe, reliable, and compliant with California Department of Transportation (CA DOT) regulations and safety standards. This position requires a highly skilled individual who can work independently in the shop or in the field, while also contributing effectively as part of a maintenance team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Preventative Maintenance & Fleet Reliability

  • Schedules and perform timely preventive maintenance of machinery and fleet equipment to ensure maximum uptime and full utilization.
  • Conducts routine service inspections on trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment.
  • Maintains preventative maintenance schedules for engines, brakes, suspension, belts, and hydraulic systems.
  • Identifies potential issues early to prevent breakdowns and reduce downtime.

2. Diesel Engine Diagnostics & Repair

  • Diagnoses and repairs diesel engines, fuel delivery systems, cooling systems, and exhaust systems.
  • Uses diagnostic tools and software to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and electronic failures.
  • Repairs or replaces major engine components such as injectors, sensors, turbochargers, and belts.
  • Ensure repairs meet manufacturer and safety standards.

3. Semi-Truck & Tractor Maintenance

  • Safely inspects, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs heavy-duty trucks and tractors.
  • Repairs drivetrain systems include transmissions, clutches, differentials, axles, and power take-off systems.
  • Services steering, suspension, air brake systems, and electrical components.
  • Responds to road calls and emergency breakdown repairs when needed.

4. Trailer Repair & Specialized Hauling Equipment

  • Performs repair and maintenance work on various trailer types, including:
    • Belt trailers, side dump trailers, tankers, trailer conveyors, flatbeds and heavy-haul trailers
  • Inspects and repairs trailer frames, landing gear, couplers, floors, and structural components.
  • Services trailer brake systems, air lines, electrical wiring, and lighting systems.
 

5. Ranch Site Loader & Field Equipment Repairs

  • Conducts mechanical inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on loaders and support equipment at ranch sites.
  • Performs field service work in remote or outdoor environments to keep ranch operations running efficiently.
  • Repairs hydraulic systems, electrical issues, fuel systems, and engine components on loaders.
  • Ensures equipment is maintained for safe use in agricultural and off-road conditions.
  • Communicates with ranch supervisors and operations teams regarding equipment needs and repair status.

6. Welding, Fabrication & Metalworking

  • Utilizes a variety of metalworking equipment and welding processes to support repairs and custom fabrication projects.
  • Performs welding and cutting functions using:
    • Arc welding, Oxygen/acetylene torch, MIG welding, TIG welding, Plasma cutting, etc
  • Fabricates and installs brackets, supports, structural reinforcements, and replacement parts.
  • Ensures fabrication work meets durability, safety, and operational requirements.

7. Pneumatic, Hydraulic & Mechanical Systems

  • Calibrates, repairs, and maintains pneumatic systems, including air brakes and air suspension.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs hydraulic systems used in belt trailers, side dumps, and conveyor equipment.
  • Repairs pumps, valves, cylinders, hoses, and fluid systems.
  • Ensures proper operation of trailer moving components and material-handling mechanisms.

8. Safety & CA DOT Compliance

  • Ensures all trucks and trailers meet CA DOT regulations, inspection standards, and safety requirements.
  • Performs DOT inspections and prepares equipment for audits and compliance checks.
  • Maintains accurate maintenance and repair documentation required for regulatory compliance.
  • Follows OSHA guidelines, shop safety procedures, and proper PPE use at all times.

9. Teamwork, Communication & Independent Work

  • Works independently to complete diagnostics and repairs with minimal supervision.
  • Collaborate with other mechanics, drivers, ranch personnel, and supervisors to coordinate fleet readiness.
  • Communicates repair needs clearly and provides recommendations for preventative maintenance.
  • Maintains a professional, safety-first attitude in both shop and field environments.
Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two years related experience.
  • Knowledge of DOT Regulations on maintenance and repairs.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diversity of individuals at all organizational levels.
  • Can work independently and as a member of various teams and committees.
