Job Summary:
The Groundskeeper is responsible for the maintenance, care, and overall appearance of the organization's grounds, landscapes, athletic fields, or green spaces. This role involves a variety of tasks related to lawn care, horticulture, equipment operation, and general upkeep to ensure the property is attractive, safe, and well-maintained.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintenance & Landscaping:
- Perform routine lawn maintenance, including mowing, edging, trimming, and fertilizing turf areas.
- Prepare and maintain flower beds, planters, and gardens.
- Perform seasonal duties such as leaf removal, aeration, dethatching, and snow removal/de-icing (where applicable).
Equipment & Safety:
- Operate and maintain a variety of groundskeeping equipment, including mowers (riding and push), trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, tractors, and utility vehicles.
- Perform routine inspection and minor maintenance/repairs on equipment to ensure proper working order and longevity.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing duties.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and storage shed.
General Upkeep & Repair:
- Remove trash, debris, and litter from the grounds and parking areas.
- Clean and maintain sidewalks, pathways, and patios.
- Perform minor repairs to fences, gates, outdoor furniture, and other grounds fixtures.
Monitor the overall condition of the grounds and report any major damage or necessary repairs to the supervisor.
Snow & Ice Management (Plowing)
- Advanced Landscaping: Oversee and participate in specialized landscaping projects,
- Equipment Operation: Expertly operate and maintain a wide range of groundskeeping equipment, including heavy-duty mowers, trimmers, tractors, and specialized horticultural tools.
- Plowing Operations: Lead and manage all snow removal and de-icing operations, including pre-treatment, plowing, shoveling, and salt/sand application for roads, parking lots, sidewalks, and entryways.
- Emergency Response: Serve as the primary point of contact and decision-maker for snow emergencies, often requiring flexible hours and call-in availability during inclement weather.
- Equipment Readiness: Ensure all plows, spreaders, snow blowers, and related vehicles are maintained, fueled, and ready for immediate deployment.
Job Training Program Management & Mentorship:
- Participant Integration: Onboard and integrate job training program participants into the regular grounds crew operations.
- Structured Training: Develop and deliver structured, on-the-job training modules focused on core groundskeeping skills (e.g., equipment safety, basic landscaping, proper pruning techniques).
- Mentorship & Evaluation: Provide regular feedback, mentorship, and performance evaluations for program participants, helping them develop professional skills and readiness for future employment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Experience in the safe operation and basic maintenance of groundskeeping equipment.
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in groundskeeping or landscaping, including at least one (1) year in a supervisory or lead role.
- Proven experience in operating heavy equipment for both landscaping and commercial snow plowing/removal.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of turf management, basic horticulture, and landscape maintenance techniques.
- Ability to perform manual labor outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining a high-quality aesthetic appearance.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to complete assigned tasks.
- Physical ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), bend, stoop, climb, and stand for extended periods.
- Valid driver's license and a clean driving record (required).
PREFFERED (OPTIONAL) QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of sustainable landscaping or water conservation practices.
- Experience maintaining athletic fields (if applicable to the location).
Work Environment:
The work is performed primarily outdoors, requiring exposure to seasonal weather changes, noise, dust, and potentially hazardous materials (with proper training and PPE). Regular physical exertion is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This role is primarily performed in an office building with standard office environment and controlled temperatures. When working outdoors or at a job site the employee may be exposed to construction equipment or other moving objects/equipment, reference job site specifics. The employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk/hear, see, read, and personally interact with others.
