CDL-A Drayage Owner Operator – Local Houston | Home Daily

Gross Potential: Approximately $5,000-$7,000 per week before deductions, depending on freight availability, availability to work, and individual effort. Compensation details are discussed during the interview.

Home Every Night – Local Houston-area port and intermodal routes.

Truckman Transport is seeking experienced CDL-A owner operators with their own tractors for steady drayage work serving Houston-area ports and terminals. We offer overweight intermodal opportunities as well as plenty of lightweight container loads to keep qualified operators moving.

Truckman provides access to an extensive chassis fleet, including more than 80 tri-axle chassis and approximately 100 super-lightweight tandem chassis. You do not need to own a trailer.

Intermodal Permit Opportunities

• Up to 93,000 pounds: Qualifying six-axle combinations may operate under the applicable TxDMV Intermodal Shipping Container Port Permit. A tractor drop axle is not required, but the owner operator is responsible for the full permit cost.
• Up to 100,000 pounds: Qualifying seven-axle combinations require an approved tractor lift/drop axle. For approved owner operators with a qualifying drop-axle tractor, Truckman will pay 50% of the current $6,000 annual permit fee.
• Both configurations must meet all applicable TxDMV requirements, including blind-spot support, roll-stability support, axle count, axle spacing, axle ratings, routing, container, and operating restrictions.
• Equipment and documents must be reviewed before permit-qualified work is assigned. Permit eligibility is not guaranteed by model year or equipment alone.

Equipment Requirements

• Own a safe, road-ready truck tractor suitable for local drayage.
• 2020 or newer preferred. Pre-2020 tractors may be considered with documentation confirming the required systems, axle configuration, spacing, and ratings.
• Operational blind-spot support required for permit-qualified work.
• Operational electronic stability control or roll-stability support required for permit-qualified work.
• A qualifying lift/drop axle is required for the 100,000-pound seven-axle opportunity, but not for the 93,000-pound six-axle opportunity.
• Applicants without the required drop axle or safety equipment may still apply if willing to retrofit or acquire qualifying equipment before performing the applicable permit work.
• Must provide equipment specifications, axle ratings, axle-spacing measurements, photographs, and a current certified tractor scale ticket before final approval for permit-qualified work.

Responsibilities

• Pick up and deliver intermodal containers from Houston-area ports and terminals to local destinations.
• Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections and keep your tractor safe and compliant.
• Follow all permit conditions, approved routes, weight limits, and DOT, state, port, and terminal requirements.
• Use the PortPro app for dispatch assignments and status updates.
• Maintain accurate ELD logs, shipping documents, delivery records, mileage, and fuel records.
• Communicate clearly with dispatch regarding schedules, delays, equipment, or load issues.
• Protect containers, chassis, and cargo from damage.

Qualifications

• Valid Class A CDL.
• Minimum 3 years of commercial driving experience.
• Houston-area port or intermodal drayage experience strongly preferred.
• Current TWIC card required.
• Current DOT physical/medical certificate.
• Clean driving record with no major violations and no more than 3 moving violations in the past 3 years.
• Must own or obtain an approved tractor before beginning work.
• Must be able to report to Pasadena, TX 77507.
• Must consistently work Monday-Friday, starting at 5:30 AM and finishing between approximately 6:00 and 7:00 PM.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work independently.
• Hazmat endorsement is a bonus but is not required.
• PortPro experience preferred but not required.

Automatic Disqualifiers

• DUI/DWI in the past 5 years.
• More than 2 moving violations.
• Vehicular criminal convictions.
• Failed drug or alcohol test.
