Position Summary
The Material Planning & Logistics Supervisor (MP&L) oversees the movement, storage, and distribution of raw materials, components, and finished goods within the automotive manufacturing facility. This role ensures that material handling operations support production schedules, meet quality standards, and are executed in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner. The supervisor leads and develops a team of material handlers, forklift operators, and warehouse staff while coordinating with production, purchasing, and logistics teams to maintain uninterrupted manufacturing flow.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise daily material handling activities, including receiving, storing, kitting, line feeding, and shipping.
- Ensure materials are delivered to production lines on time to support just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing requirements.
- Monitor inventory levels and coordinate with Materials Planners to avoid shortages or excess stock.
- Assign tasks and manage work schedules for material handling team members.
- Oversee safe operation of forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment.
- Maintain compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards, including OSHA and ISO requirements.
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and improve material flow.
- Coordinate with production supervisors, quality control, and procurement to resolve material supply issues.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as delivery accuracy, inventory accuracy, and material handling costs.
- Conduct employee training on safe work practices, equipment operation, and company policies.
- Lead root cause analysis for material-related delays or quality concerns.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of shipping and receiving documentation.
Qualifications
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business, or related field preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.
- 3 years of material handling or warehouse supervision experience, preferably in automotive manufacturing or similar high-volume environment.
- Strong leadership, team-building, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of inventory control principles and ERP/MRP systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and warehouse management systems.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles, JIT delivery, and Kanban systems.
- Forklift certification preferred.
- Ability to work flexible shifts, including evenings and weekends, to meet production demands.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
- Prolonged standing, walking, and exposure to manufacturing environment.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures and around moving equipment.
