Position Summary
The Shop Assistant / Small Engine Mechanic supports the maintenance and repair of landscape and snow removal equipment while assisting with overall shop organization and fleet readiness. This position is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnosing and repairing small engine equipment, maintaining shop cleanliness, and supporting mechanics to ensure equipment is safe, reliable, and ready for daily operations.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesSmall Engine Maintenance & Repair
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair small engine equipment including:
- Commercial mowers
- String trimmers
- Edgers
- Blowers
- Chainsaws
- Hedge trimmers
- Generators
- Other landscape equipment
- Perform routine maintenance including oil changes, spark plug replacement, belt replacement, blade sharpening, air filter replacement, and fuel system maintenance.
- Troubleshoot engine, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical issues.
- Prepare equipment for seasonal operations.
Shop Support
- Assist mechanics with repairs on trucks, trailers, snowplows, salt spreaders, and heavy equipment.
- Wash and clean vehicles and equipment as needed.
- Fuel and stage equipment for daily operations.
- Assist with loading and unloading equipment and materials.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
Inventory & Parts Management
- Organize tools, equipment, and parts inventory.
- Track and restock shop supplies.
- Assist with receiving and organizing parts deliveries.
- Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
Fleet Readiness
- Conduct daily equipment inspections.
- Identify and report maintenance concerns before equipment failures occur.
- Support emergency repairs during peak landscape and snow seasons.
- Ensure equipment is operational and available for crews each day.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
- Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain a safe working environment.
- Report safety hazards and equipment concerns promptly.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Experience repairing small engines or maintaining landscape equipment preferred.
- Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Chauffeur's License or CDL preferred but not required.
- Basic knowledge of hand and power tools.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to safely operate landscape equipment.
- Ability to follow maintenance schedules and repair procedures.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Positive attitude and willingness to assist wherever needed.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb throughout the workday.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to safely use tools, equipment, and machinery.
