Role Description The Utility Inspector is a full-time, on-site role based in Charlotte, NC, responsible for inspecting and documenting utility installations, relocations, and related construction activities. This role involves performing field inspections to verify compliance with project plans, specifications, and safety standards; recording location and condition of utilities; and communicating findings to project managers, contractors, and public agencies. The Utility Inspector will review drawings and utility maps, identify potential conflicts in the field, and support coordination efforts to minimize disruptions. Daily tasks include preparing inspection reports, photographing field conditions, maintaining detailed records, and participating in site meetings to provide utility-related updates. The role requires consistent on-site presence, adherence to safety protocols, and reliable travel to project locations within the area.
Qualifications
- Field inspection, construction observation, or utility locating experience, with the ability to read and interpret utility plans, maps, and construction drawings.
- Strong documentation skills, including accurate note-taking, report writing, and use of digital tools for data entry, photos, and record management.
- Knowledge of basic construction practices, underground and overhead utility systems, and relevant safety standards and regulations.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills for interacting with contractors, engineers, public agencies, and community stakeholders.
- High attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to identify and escalate conflicts or non-compliance issues promptly.
- Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions and on active construction sites, following all safety procedures and PPE requirements.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel to multiple project sites as needed.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional technical training or experience in utilities, civil construction, or inspection is preferred.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and complete tasks with minimal supervision while maintaining a professional demeanor.
