Position Summary
The Surgery Supervisor is responsible for the daily operations and coordination of the surgical services department. This position provides leadership and direction to surgical staff, promotes safe and efficient patient care, ensures compliance with regulatory and organizational standards, and supports effective collaboration among surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, surgical technologists, and administration.

 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise, coordinate, and evaluate the daily activities of operating room and surgical services staff.
  • Develop and manage staff schedules to ensure appropriate coverage based on surgical volume and patient-care needs.
  • Ensure adherence to infection prevention, sterile technique, patient safety, and surgical-site protocols.
  • Promote compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and applicable healthcare standards.
  • Monitor staff performance, productivity, attendance, and competency.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, orientation, and ongoing education for surgical services personnel.
  • Assist with recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, performance evaluations, and disciplinary processes as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia teams, nursing leadership, and other departments to resolve operational and patient-care issues.
  • Monitor the availability, maintenance, and appropriate use of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Assist with inventory management and identify opportunities to control costs without compromising patient safety or quality of care.
  • Investigate patient-care concerns, safety events, and operational problems and participate in corrective action plans.
  • Monitor quality-improvement indicators and assist with departmental performance-improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation and communication throughout the surgical process.
  • Serve as a clinical and operational resource for staff and provide leadership during complex or unexpected situations.
  • Participate in department meetings, policy development, process improvement, and organizational initiatives.
  • Maintain professional standards and promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, respect, and patient-centered care.
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

 
Qualifications
  • Current nursing license
  • Minium of 5 years of surgery experience.
  • Leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, patient safety, infection prevention, and sterile technique.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of surgical services operations, patient safety, infection prevention, and sterile technique.
  • Knowledge of applicable healthcare regulations, standards, and quality requirements.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and develop clinical staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build collaborative relationships with physicians, staff, patients, and leadership.
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage multiple demands, and remain effective in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, solve problems, and respond appropriately to urgent situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism and ethical conduct.
  • Basic proficiency with electronic health records, scheduling systems, and Microsoft Office or similar technology

Work Environment/Physical Demands
  • Work is primarily performed in an ambulatory surgical center, including operating rooms, patient-care areas, and administrative spaces.
  • Environment may include exposure to blood and bodily fluids, infectious materials, surgical equipment, sharps, medications, and cleaning/disinfecting agents.
  • May work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and changing priorities.
  • May require early mornings, extended hours, weekends, holidays, or on-call coverage based on department needs.
  • Required personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as applicable.
  • Requires frequent standing and walking, with occasional sitting, bending, reaching, stooping, and kneeling.
  • Requires use of hands for handling surgical instruments, equipment, supplies, and computer equipment.
  • May occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull equipment and supplies and assist with patient movement or positioning using appropriate safe-handling practices.
  • Requires sufficient visual, auditory, and communication abilities to safely perform essential job functions.
