JOB SUMMARY The Athletic Trainer develops, implements, and maintains comprehensive health care programs for patients, clients, and athletes. The practice of athletic training includes injury/illness prevention and wellness protection, clinical evaluation and diagnosis, immediate and emergency care, treatment and rehabilitation, and organizational and professional health and well-being of individuals under the direction of a physician. Under the direction of the Director of Sports Performance & Sports Physical Therapy, the Athletic Trainer is placed in various sites for provision of services including, but not limited to, high school/college/university, outreach programming, community events and engagement, and physician clinic. In collaboration with and under the general supervision of a licensed physical therapist, the Athletic Trainer will assist in provision of physical medicine and rehabilitation services to patients, as prescribed by overseeing physician. JOB QUALIFICATIONS Education - Bachelor degree in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine or related field. Licensure & Certifications - Current State of Michigan Licensed Athletic Trainer. Experience - New Grads encouraged to apply ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Under the direction and direct supervision of the Program Director or a sports staff physical therapist, the Athletic Trainer will provide physical medicine and rehabilitation services to patients while collaborating with the physician regarding patient's plan of care. 2. Develops and implements sports specific performance training and strength and conditioning programming for local athletes 3. Serves as an educator, consultant, sports performance instructor, strength and conditioning specialist for SMMH community 4. Monitor measures for customer service and clinical quality. 5. Organize and perform community presentations on sports injury prevention body mechanics and performance enhancement, directed at community youth, high school, collegiate and professional athletes 6. Facilitate and maintain relationship between SMMH sports Medicine and school athletic trainer by way of programs (Clinics, screenings, training camps) 7. Facilitate a smooth continuum of patient care between Physicians, Physical Therapists and Sports Performance Staff. 8. Instructs patients with home exercise programs and monitors patient's physical therapy progress including gait training, therapeutic exercises, rehabilitation, and conditioning programs. Provides patient education materials 9. Assists clinical staff with the operation of the clinic, including rooming patients, order entry (under the supervision of the physician), physical therapy scheduling, injection preparation, general paperwork and chart preparation. 10. Prepares athletes for practice or competition, including taping, bracing, and bandaging. Attends games, competitions, and tournaments. Evaluates injuries to determine their management and possible referral to the physicians. 11. Markets the sports medicine program under the direction of the Program Director. 12. Performs other job duties as requested. 13. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution. 14. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places. 15. Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMHS. 16.
