What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Teaching and Learning position at Trinity Valley School?
About This Opportunity
Trinity Valley School is creating a new leadership role that sits at the heart of our educational mission: the Director of Teaching and Learning. This is a role for someone who believes deeply in the transformative power of great teaching-and who knows that supporting teachers is how we unlock extraordinary learning for students.
If you're energized by the idea of working across all divisions (PK-12) to strengthen curriculum, elevate instruction, and build a thriving culture of professional growth, this role is for you. You'll partner with teachers, division heads, department chairs, and the Assistant Head of School to ensure that every classroom at TVS reflects our commitment to fine scholarship, wide constructive interests, intelligent citizenship, and spiritual and moral development.
This isn't a role about compliance, curriculum charts, or checking boxes. It's about curiosity, collaboration, and possibility. It's about helping teachers think meaningfully and creatively about their work-and helping to create the conditions for them to do their best.
Your Impact
Champion Teaching Excellence Across PK-12
You'll be the school's chief advocate for great teaching. Through conversations with teachers and leaders, presence in learning spaces, and analysis of student learning, you'll develop a deep understanding of what's working across our school-and where we have opportunities to grow. You'll organize and synthesize what you learn, share insights with division heads and senior leadership, and propose strategic initiatives that move our teaching and learning forward. Then you'll help bring those initiatives to life.
Build Curriculum Coherence and Alignment
Your leadership will facilitate vertical and horizontal curriculum mapping to ensure students experience seamless transitions and meaningful connections as they move through TVS. You will facilitate cross-divisional collaboration, oversee curriculum review, and ensure that curriculum aligns with our four core objectives.
Design and Lead Professional Development
You'll identify opportunities for faculty professional learning and design experiences that inspire growth. You'll manage elements of the professional development budget and create opportunities for teachers to learn from each other and from the broader world of education. Your work will help teachers feel supported, challenged, and excited about their craft.
Support a Culture of Feedback
While you won't evaluate teachers yourself, you'll play a key role in designing the teaching and learning components of a new, growth-oriented feedback system for faculty. You'll help create clear standards and systems that reflect our mission and values. You'll serve as a partner-a trusted resource teachers can turn to for support and collaboration. In a year that TVS will introduce a new formal feedback process, your intentionality and thoughtfulness will also help our community appreciate feedback as a gift that helps us grow.
Lead with Care and Strategy in Hiring and Onboarding
You'll bring a broad, strategic perspective to faculty recruitment, helping craft role descriptions and identify candidates who will thrive at TVS. A valuable part of this role will be designing and facilitating programming that helps new colleagues feel welcomed, supported, and set up for success.
Advance Experiential Education
You'll supervise our newly reimagined Experiential Education department, which brings together what were previously separate programs for global education, outdoor education, and experiential learning. By incorporating this work into Teaching & Learning, we're signaling that experiential education isn't an "extra"-it's integral to how students learn at TVS. You'll support the director and team as they build out this exciting, evolving program, and you'll support all teachers in seeking out opportunities to deepen the integration of experiential education into their curriculum.
Be Present and Engaged in School Life
You'll maintain a visible presence across campus, participating joyfully in the life of the school. You'll contribute to faculty handbook development, support policy documentation, and in some years, you may also teach an Upper School class, serve as an advisor, sponsor a club, or coach an athletics or competitive academic team.
Who You Are
You're someone who loves teaching and learning. You're inspired by the idea of empowering teachers to think meaningfully and creatively about their work. You bring curiosity and respect for all perspectives and levels-whether you're talking with a prekindergarten teacher, an Upper School department chair, or a student. You see possibilities where others see challenges, and you motivate people to imagine what could be. Your big picture view complements your ability to break down a large project into manageable milestones to move the ball down the court.
You're a highly-relational collaborator and a bridge-builder who knows how to listen deeply, synthesize complex information, and translate ideas into action. You're comfortable with ambiguity and energized by the opportunity to shape a new role.
