The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Trinity University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Spanish specializing in 20th- or 21st-century Spanish or Latin American literature and culture, beginning August 2026. We welcome candidates engaged in theater and performance, graphic narratives and new media, border and diaspora studies, or other interdisciplinary fields.


The successful candidate will teach Spanish language and upper-division literature and culture courses, as well as courses in Trinity’s First-Year Experience and Pathways general education curriculum (writing, communication, diversity, and engaged citizenship). The teaching load is 3/2, with eligibility for a pre-tenure research leave.


Applicants must hold a Ph.D. by August 2026, demonstrate an active research agenda, native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English, and show a strong commitment to teaching excellence and diversity, equity, and inclusion. 


BACKGROUND

The Carlos Alvarez School of Arts and Humanities, endowed with a gift of $25 million, is at the center of Trinity's liberal arts education. The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures (ML&L) is the largest and most ethnically diverse academic unit at Trinity University. It offers majors in five languages (Chinese, French, German, Russian, Spanish), in Global Latinx Studies, a minor in Comparative Literature as well as beginning and intermediate Italian and Japanese language courses. ML&L takes pride in offering various opportunities for our students to study abroad, conduct research, and partake in experiential learning experiences. We work closely with the Mexico, the Americas, and Spain (MAS), the East Asian Studies at Trinity (EAST) programs, and the City of San Antonio.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be expected to teach Spanish language courses at all levels, as well as upper-division courses in Spanish on a variety of subjects related to the literature and culture of the Spanish-speaking world. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to teach in Trinity University’s First Year Experience program, as well as courses in the Pathways general education curriculum that focus on writing, oral/visual communication, diversity, and engaged citizenship. The teaching load is 3/2 and pre-tenured faculty will have the opportunity to apply for a one semester leave in their third year to advance the candidate’s research agenda. QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Required: Ph.D. in Spanish, Latin American, or Latinx literature and culture

Preferred: Preference will be given to candidates with an active research profile in 20th and 21st-century Spanish or Latin American theater and performance; graphic narratives and new media; border and diaspora studies; and other interdisciplinary approaches.

EXPERIENCE

Required:

Teaching: experience at the undergraduate level for Spanish language courses (beginning, intermediate to advanced) and Spanish and/or Latin American and/or U.S. Latinx literature and culture courses.


Research/Scholarship: expertise in 20th and/or 21st century literature and culture from the Americas (Latin American/U.S. Latinx) and/or Spain.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English.


ATTENDANCE

This position is not eligible for remote/hybrid work.
