Job Summary / Purpose

In accordance with our mission and core values, this position is established to serve as a consultant/resource professional by providing staff development expertise as an educator, facilitator, change agent, leader and researcher.  The Perioperative Educator supports the development of the direct-care nurse and fosters nursing excellence through new knowledge and the delivery of evidence based practice.  Facilitation of the educational process includes assessment, development, planning, implementation and evaluation of competency assessment, continuing education and leadership development.  The Clinical Nurse Educator also serves as a role model for professional behavior.  Teamwork is a vital component of patient care; therefore, incumbents will be expected to demonstrate their commitment to same through effective collaborative efforts.

 

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  1. ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION:
  • Assesses educational needs through a variety of methods both formal and informal for clinical staff and/or community education.  Conducts evaluations of all projects and education for desired outcomes and revises future work goals, methods and processes to support evidence-based practice and quality care.  Ensures educational activities are congruent with Periop nursing strategies, goals, values and vision.
  • Annually conducts educational needs assessment and competency using a variety of methods.
  • Evaluates educational projects based on system needs and agreed upon outcome criteria and reports outcomes to the Director of Perioperative Services.

 

  1. PLANNING AND/OR ORGANIZATION:

 

  • Facilitates and leads Periop 101 course.
  • Develops curriculum and action plans to meet identified needs of clinical staff and/or community.
  • Defines and incorporates all important information in action plans to meet identified needs.
  • Assures plan is designed to meet needs of target audience.
  • Utilizes Elsevier for information to develop innovative and successful programs.  Draws on practice standards, evidence-based literature and research to develop material for continuing education. 
  • Communicates action plans promptly and professionally to target audience.
  • Works collaboratively with peers, Nursing Leadership, Human Resources, Quality and Risk Management to identify needs             and plan programs that enhance the competencies of patient care staff.
  • Develops, facilitates and evaluates orientation program for nursing services annually, and as needed to meet all requirements of federal, state and local regulatory agencies.

 

  1. INTERVENTION AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT
  • Utilizes effective intervention techniques and project management tools to successfully access, plan, contract, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Implements action plans which maximize resources to achieve outcomes.
  • Participates in development of standards of practice, policies, procedures and programs to enhance quality of patient care, including performance improvement plans.
  • Supports and promotes well-designed research and bases clinical education on such research.
  • Demonstrates and maintains expertise as a nurse educator as evidenced by successful course evaluations.
  • Reviews, extracts, compiles, and analyzes date to prepare reports and make recommendations for organizational process changes

 

  1. GROUP FACILITATION AND TEAMWORK
  • Facilitates goal achievement and group dynamics in inter/intradepartmental and system wide projects. 
  • Models productive team member behavior in all activities.
  • Uses key learning and group process principles
  • Provides and elicits feedback keeping feedback concise and focused.
  • Effectively manages groups of individuals (co-workers, activity participants).
  • Takes an active role in leading and participating in committees and/or groups
  • Participates collaboratively with other educators throughout facility (system) for mutual support, effective and efficient planning and teamwork.
  • Facilitates development of leadership, critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Facilitates the development of new team member skills for successful balancing of needed skills among team.

 

  1. DATA MANAGEMENT
  • Collects data related to educational offerings and departmental tracking measures.
  • Summarize, analyze and evaluate data to improve future courses and provide feedback to instructors.
  • Manage and coordinate educational offerings in electronic learning management system (LEARN).
  • Reports departmental tracking measures to identified parties (i.e. NEOC, department head, etc.) appropriately.
  • Serves as resource in the development and provision of education related to electronic medical record documentation.

 

  1. CLINICAL PRACTICE
  • Collaborates with other health professionals to develop/facilitate evidence-based, efficient and cost effective care.
  • Consults with team members regarding appropriate nursing interventions for selected patient populations.
  • Serves as resource person to health team members. 
  • Promotes the use of nursing process in the care of patients and families.

  • Surgery (Main OR, CVOR, PACU/SDS, OPC/GI services)
  • Facilitation and oversight of Periop 101 Program
  • Oversight of all new staff orientation with collaboration with OR Leadership
  • Promotion of evidence based practice with collaboration with OR Leadership
  • Knowledge and promotion of regulatory requirement compliance.
  • Oversight of in-services ( equipment, supplies, etc )
  • Assessment of staff education needs in collaboration with OR Leadership.
  • Participate in interview process of potential candidates and assist with training staff on interviewing.
  • Promotion of certification and professional organization membership.
  • Facilitation of Annual Drills ( Malignant Hyperthermia, Fire Drill, Mock Codes)
  • Liaises with system educators to identify organizational education needs.
  • Attendance and presentation at monthly staff meeting.
    • PACU\PreOP\PAT\Phase II
      • Oversight of all new staff orientation with collaboration with perianesthesia Leadership
      • Promotion of evidence based practice with collaboration with perianesthesia Leadership
      • Knowledge and promotion of regulatory requirement compliance.
      • Oversight of inservices ( equipment, supplies, etc )
      • Assessment of staff education needs in collaboration with perianesthesia Leadership.
      • Participate in interview process of potential candidates and assist with training staff on interviewing.
      • Promotion of certification and professional organization membership.
      • Facilitation of Annual Drills ( Malignant Hyperthermia, Fire Drill, Mock Codes)
      • Liaises with system educators to identify organizational education needs
    • GI LAB
      • Oversight of all new staff orientation with collaboration with GI Lab Leadership
      • Promotion of evidence based practice with collaboration with GI Lab Leadership
      • Knowledge and promotion of regulatory requirement compliance.
      • Oversight of inservices ( equipment, supplies,etc )
      • Assessment of staff education needs in collaboration with GI Lab Leadership.
      • Participate in interview process of potential candidates and assist with training staff on interviewing.
      • Promotion of certification and professional organization membership.
      • Facilitation of Annual Drills ( Malignant Hyperthermia, Fire Drill, Mock Codes)
      • Liaises with system educators to identify organizational education needs
  1. Evaluation
    • Evaluation will be based upon completion of annual drills with reasonable perioperative leadership support
    • Preparation of new staff for assigned unit.
    • Retention of staff
    • All staff complete an appropriate orientation plan for area assigned
    • Perioperative leadership and coworkers confirm appropriate availability and support.
    • Evidence of contribution/development of clinical policies/guidelines/protocols.
    •  Evidence of ongoing professional development.
    •  Required certification skills current.
    •  Number of education contacts/sessions provided for clinical staff service specific education planning and delivery.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • BSN required.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of clinical experience.

Required Licensure and Certifications

  • Current unencumbered RN licensure to practice in the State of Ohio
  • BLS required.

 

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training

Must demonstrate competence in all required skills.  Able to deal effectively with patient care partners, patients, family members and physicians.  Must demonstrate excellent written/oral communication skills, organizational skills and time management skills.  Must demonstrate effectiveness in applicable computer skills – i.e. Word, Excel, PPT.
