Hours | Schedule:

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Range from 7am-5pm (determined by patient volume), Monday-Friday
  • Intermittent night and weekend work as required by machine availability for quality assurance testing and vendor availability.

Position Summary:

The medical physicist works as part of the radiation oncology team to assure the accurate delivery of a radiation treatment prescription by performing calculations of dose distributions, designing treatment aids/devices, and assuring the accuracy of the treatment unit parameters and settings for daily patient treatments.

Team: 3 Medical Physicists, 3 Dosimetrists and 3 Radiation Oncologists in a department with growing SRS/SBRT and HDR programs.

Hardware: Cyberknife, Radixact, Truebeam, Flexitron

Software: Mosaiq (upcoming transition to Aria), Eclipse, Precision, MIM, Oncentra


What you will do:

  • Assists in planning for resource allocation including equipment usage, selection and replacement, staffing requirements, budget preparation, and review of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for performance specification, acceptance testing, and commissioning of new equipment.
  • Performs calibration of the treatment machines and maintenance of all information necessary for their appropriate use.
  • Serves as the focal point for machine maintenance and repair, and when systems are again ready for clinical use.
  • Oversees the performance levels of imaging equipment used in radiation oncology.
  • Develops and maintains a quality assurance program for all treatment modalities, localization procedures, and computational equipment and programs to assure the patients receive prescribed doses and dose distributions, within acceptable degrees of accuracy and according to the recommendations of AAPM task group reports, industry standards, accrediting organization, and federal and state regulations.
  • Maintains all instrumentation required for calibration of sources, measurement of radiation, and calculation of doses.
  • Works in conjunction with Radiation Safety Officer to comply with all regulating and certifying agencies.
  • Provides consultation for personnel radiation exposure.
  • Works in conjunction with others in developing and implementing new treatment protocols.
  • Participates on the institutional Radiation Safety Committee and other committees as needed.
  • Performs calculation of shielding required for new or renovated treatment rooms, radioactive source storage and handling facilities.
  • Consults with Radiation Oncologists on the physical and radiobiological aspects of patients’ treatments and the development of treatment plans.
  • Responsible for acquisition and storage of data for treatment plans.
  • Perform and guide dosimetry staff with patient-specific measurements, calculation of dose distributions and machine settings for treatments.
  • Performs design and fabrication of treatment aids and treatment beam modifiers as needed.
  • Assures the accuracy of treatment unit parameters and settings used for a patient’s treatment, including correct transfer of parameters between the simulator, treatment plan, and the treatment unit, and the periodic review of each patient’s chart.
  • Performs in-vivo measurement to verify the dose delivered to a patient.
  • Assists the Radiation Oncologists in statistical analysis for evaluation of treatment effectiveness.
  • Develops techniques to improve the delivery of radiation treatments.
  • Participates in patient discussion conferences.
  • Provides continuing education for radiation oncology staff.
  • Participates in radiation oncology physics or related medical meetings and conferences to receive and disseminate state-of-the-art information.
  • Collects, organizes, and assists in the interpretation of quality assurance data and implementation of necessary changes.
  • Collaborates with regional physics team to improve processes and support network initiatives.
  • Provides intermittent support, including on-site coverage, to regional sites.

What you will need:

  • Master of Science or Doctoral degree in Medical Physics, Radiological Physics, Physics, or related discipline
  • Board certified, or board eligible, by The American Board of Radiology or The American Board of Medical Physics. *If board eligible, board exam shall be successfully passed within 24 months of hire.
  • Two-years of experience performing therapeutic radiation physics in a clinical setting (may include experience gained during residency).
  • Preferred: Experience with the following treatment platforms and systems, as well as Epic electronic medical record.
    • Grand Rapids – Lacks Cancer Center: Truebeam, CyberKnife, Tomotherapy, and Flexitron HDR; Eclipse, Precision and Oncentra treatment planning systems; and Mosaiq oncology information system
    • Muskegon – Johnson Family Cancer Center: TrueBeam, GammaMed iX HDR; Eclipse treatment planning; Aria oncology information system
