Director of Counseling Services 


Salary Range: 90k to 100k (Salary determination is based on experience & qualifications & licenses)


Trinity Washington University seeks a Director of Counseling Services located in the Health and Wellness Center. The Health and Wellness Center supports the academic mission of Trinity by providing professional health and wellness services to Trinity Washington University students. The Director of Counseling Services provides direct counseling/therapy to students and oversees clinical services, crisis intervention, and student support programs. The Director of Counseling provides a full range of clinical and non-clinical services. This position provides supervision to other counseling staff and Interns (as available) in the Health Center, and reports to the Director of Health & Wellness Center.

Education Requirements & Qualifications: 


  • A Master’s degree is required; Master's or Doctoral Degree: requires a graduate degree in Counseling, Clinical Social Work, or Psychology.
  • Must have an Active DC License. Must hold credentials such as those below to practice independently: 
    • Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW)
    • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
    • Licensed Clinical Psychologist (PhD or PsyD)
  • Experience with mental health provision in a college or university counseling center.
  • Must carry malpractice insurance.
  • Clinical supervisor experience that includes reviewing clinical documentation for services rendered by supervisees.
  • Knowledge, skill, and experience specifically focused on the needs of students of color, students from indigenous communities, LGBTQIA students, international students, students from diverse religious affiliations, students with disabilities, undocumented students, ELL / MLL students, and/or first-generation college students on a university campus.


Responsibilities & Functions:

 

Counseling Services:

  • Provide individual therapy, group therapy, case management, and crisis intervention to students.
  • Conduct crisis triage and immediate risk assessments for students experiencing acute psychological distress.
  • Review clinical documentation for services rendered by supervisees. 
  • Provide clinical oversight for counselors providing counseling services. 
  • Keep timely, accurate, and ethical records consistent with Trinity’s policy.
  • Facilitate support groups and educational outreach programs focused on mental health awareness across campus.
  • Provide education related to mental health promotion and academic success.
  • Conduct outreach, workshops and training on various mental health and wellbeing topics as needed and in collaboration with other Health and Wellness Center staff.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use crisis intervention skills and respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Knowledge of and experience providing a broad range of psychotherapy and counseling methods in a brief therapy model.
  • Develop sound treatment goals and means by which to measure the levels of progress of the patient.
  • Assist with the arrangement for off-campus referrals for students as necessary.
  • Comply with confidentiality requirements as set by HIPAA, FERPA, federal, and state and local regulation.

 

Secondary Responsibilities (Functions & Tasks):

  • Provide consultation to faculty and staff regarding students of concern.
  • Other duties as assigned and deemed necessary by the Director of Health and Wellness and the Vice President for Student Affairs.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  


  • Demonstrate an understanding of mental health and wellness needs for college women. 
  • Prior experience with community mental health, social services, clients who have had trauma, especially early adverse childhood experiences.
  • Possess excellent written, and exceptional interpersonal, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work in diverse community respectfully with staff and students.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • High degree of organization, attention to detail and ability to follow through on various responsibilities. 
  • Candidates should have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office. 

Schedule and Work Environment:

  • 40 hours per week minimum, including regular office hours to support the business hours of the University. 
  • This is an all year-around,12-month, full-time, in-person position.
  • Ability to work efficiently with many interruptions from walk-ins, telephone inquiries and other student requests.
  • The noise level is usually quiet.
