Position: MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELOR

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of management, works as part of a multi-disciplinary team to organize, coordinate, oversee and participate in specialized counseling and mental health treatment and services.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Mental Health Counselor incumbents work independently in providing psychiatric social services to mental health patients.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Provide an array of outpatient mental health services to promote individualized patient recovery Conduct intakes, individual, group, and family therapy

Develop service plans and conduct reviews as needed throughout the duration of treatment Provide mental health assessments, counseling, referrals, and intervention services

Complete and maintain documentation in a timely and accurate manner and according to Federal, State and Practice guidelines

Write reports to court, school, or other community agencies as necessary Follow up with psychiatrists and/or attending physicians as required.

Performs group and individual therapy; prepares required documentation.

Organizes, coordinates and oversees caseload targeted at various mental health problems in the community and beyond.

Assures compliance with State regulations, legal requirements and established Trinity Behavioral Health policies and procedures related to mental health services.

Evaluates and determines a prospective patient's eligibility for services.

Attends meetings, provides expertise on difficult cases; coordinate activities with other treatment team members as required.

Performs related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Individual, group, and family therapy techniques. Crisis intervention techniques.

Able to make professional evaluations, decisions, and recommendation for treatment planning and implementation

Negotiation, persuasion, and investigative techniques. Analytical and assessment skills.

Social work theory and practices including mental health treatment concerning values and ethics, human behavior, diagnosis and treatment, assessment, cultural responsibilities, community involvement, and case management.

Principles and practices of supervision and training.

Psychological principles including test construction, administration and evaluation. Group and individual psychotherapy methods and concepts.

Record-keeping techniques. Strong computer literacy skills

Able to work independently and as a positive member of a team

Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with mentally or emotionally disabled persons and their families

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Comfortable treating both routine and serious mental health illness

Oral and written communication skills. Research methods and report writing skills.

Laws, rules and regulations related to assigned activities. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Health and safety regulations.

ABILITY TO:

Provide effective psychiatric services for chronic and acute mental health clients.

Assure compliance with State regulations and established Trinity Behavioral Health policies and procedures. Present information, recommendations, treatment plans, and supporting documentation clearly and concisely.

Provide assessments and determine proper psychotherapeutic methods. Conduct group psychotherapy including complex interpersonal skills.

Compile and verify data and prepare reports.

Read, interpret, and apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Maintain current knowledge of technological advances in the field.

Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Work independently with little direction.

Plan and organize work.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

A Master's degree in social work/marriage and family therapist/clinical mental health counseling from an accredited school and two years' experience in psychiatric social work in mental health setting.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California Driver's License.

Must be registered and maintain active registration with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences as an Associate Clinical Social Worker (ASW), an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) or an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC) and able to perform the supervised clinical experience hours required for licensure as an LCSW, LMFT or LPCC.

ENVIRONMENT: Office and clinic environment.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $35.00 - $45.00 per hour
