MEDIA SPECIALIST (LIBRARIAN) located at Trimble JR/SR High

 

 

 

 

Purpose:  To assume professional responsibility for the overall leadership and supervision of the Library Media Center program that is designed to provide a direct line from the wisdom of the past to the information of the present in order to support an instructional program that develops in each student the skills, attitudes, and knowledge to meet and exceed the Kentucky Core Academic Standards; to work collaboratively with all members of the school staff to achieve academic excellence and enhance a culture of research within the school.

Reports To: Principal

Qualifications:

  1. A master’s degree or higher and the required Kentucky certificate for the assigned position.
  2. At least five – seven (5 - 7) years of excellent experience in teaching and in working with children and adolescents.
  3. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of library media services.
  4. Hold a valid driver’s license.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to use computers for word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual and audio presentations, and telecommunications.
  6. The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with students, parents and faculty.
  7. Demonstrate enthusiasm and interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents and community.

Specific Performance Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Create and maintain an attractive, organized, stimulating, functional, healthy, safe, and nurturing, Library Media Center that encourages student responsibility and uses positive motivation, challenging instructional strategies, effective management techniques, and appropriate displays and exhibits, with proper attention to visual, acoustic, and thermal environments.
  2. Function as the acquisitions officer for the Library Media Center. Purchase print and non-print materials, instructional software, and electronic media equipment to provide research and data retrieval resources that support instruction in the Kentucky Core Academic Standards, following the district guidelines for purchase of materials.
  3. Establish a process for the selection and evaluation of all print and non-print materials and electronic data resources to be housed in the Library Media Center based on established criteria and responding to the needs of the instructional program.
  4. Review periodically the entire collection of print and non-print materials, electronic data resources, software, and equipment for their continuing usefulness, curriculum relevance, consistency with the Kentucky Core Academic Standards, balance of subject areas, age appropriateness, biases and stereotypes, currency, and manner of presentation. Remove and update outdated materials no longer relevant to the curriculum or materials containing inappropriate representations.
  5. Maintain the library automation system which accurately reflects holding of collection.
  6. Provide effective circulation services that encourage use and equitable access for all students, staff, and other individuals, with appropriate accountability for care of materials. Services should include circulation of individual materials as well as preparation of class materials requested by teachers.
  7. Encourage habits of independent inquiry and research by assisting individuals and groups of students in conducting research and information retrieval. Engage the learners in tasks that require analytical and critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity.
  8. Plans resource-based classroom assignments likely to lead to extensive use of the library and informational resources through flexibly scheduled library programming.
  9. Prepare, recommend, and operate a budget for the Library Media Center and assist the staff in the preparation of budget requests and in the selection of instructional materials.
  10. Collaborate with the technology coordinator and teachers in assessing and promoting the effective use of instructional technologies.
  11. Provide literature activities and programming to promote reading and literacy, using innovative methods tailored to the needs of individual students or groups of students.
  12. Establish appropriate partnerships with state, county and local libraries.
  13. Use effective presentation skills when employing direct instruction, including appropriate vocabulary and examples, clear and legible visuals, and articulate and audible speech.
  14. Complete in a timely fashion all records and reports required by regulation or requested by the Principal or designee. Document use of the facility and use of materials.
  15. Encourage students to be independent readers and learners by providing reading guidance and promoting use of library resources in extracurricular problem solving and life skills.

  2. Assume responsibility for all students within the school, beyond those specifically assigned, supervising in a fair and constructive manner. Assist with supervision of students in non-classroom areas and in areas as assigned.
  3. Assist with extracurricular activities, supporting the total program of the school. Attend student events to demonstrate genuine interest in the life of the students.
  4. Maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with the administration, instructional staff, students, parents, and representatives of resource agencies with the community, articulating the needs, resources, and success of the library media program.
  5. Represent the school and district at community, state and professional meetings.
  6. Answer correspondence promptly.
  7. Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.
  8. Maintain and improve professional competence.
  9. Demonstrate punctuality and dependability.
  10. Carry out assignments in a timely manner without undue monitoring and checking.
  11. Adhere to the Trimble County Board of Education Policies and Procedures.

  • Visual Acuity – seeing at a level which allows reading of numbers and text, operation of equipment, inspection of machines, etc.
  • Vision
    • Color - ability to identify and distinguish colors
    • Peripheral – observing an area that can be seen up and down or right and left when eyes are fixed on a given point.Working Conditions: The worker is subject to both environmental conditions as activities occur both inside and outside.Salary: Commensurate with the school district’s Certified Salary Schedule
