Responsible for performing decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the hospital, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process.
Education
Job Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of a Sterile Processing and Distribution (SPD) Technician course preferred.
- Must have one (1) of the following:
- Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA).
- Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) through the Certification Board for Sterile Processing & Distribution (CBSPD).
- 1 year of SPD experience preferred

- Identifies broken and/or malfunctioning instruments.
- Uses First In, First Out (FIFO) principle to store processed surgical instrumentations in designated areas.
- Pulls correct requested instrumentation and supplies for surgical case carts as needed, per surgeon pick sheets.
- Follows manufacturer recommendations when operating SPD equipment.
- Works rotational weekends pulling SPD call technician duties.
- Restocks par level of decontamination protective supplies (e.g., gloves, masks with face shield, gowns).
- Restocks par level of decontamination cleaning solutions (e.g., detergents, enzymatic cleaner, lubricant).
- Completes applicable checks and maintenance of sterilizers, washers, and ultrasonic cleaner.
- Refers to surgery and endoscopy schedule to plan and prepare for needs of the day.
- Cleans and checks all equipment for operational performance prior to storing.
- Shelves sterile sets and peel packs properly in designated areas.
- Utilizes principles of safety and infection control, including universal precautions, decontaminates/processes instruments, etc.
- Cares for all instruments individually based on design function and delicacy.
- Cleans and processes flexible and rigid endoscopes.
- Reassembles instruments sets as it is listed on count sheets.
- Recognizes and replaces broken instrumentations in sets.
- Reviews SPD supply inventory and initiate orders as necessary.
- Demonstrates commitment to departmental goals.
- Attends and participates in meetings, in-services, and virtual/in-person training to keep current with trends in the SPD.
