JOB DESCRIPTION

Cancer registrars record information that may be used to help detect cancer earlier, improve treatments and increase survival rates. Medical and pathology records are examined to determine patient eligibility for the cancer registry. Abstracts of medical records are completed by translating the medical terminology into cancer registry standardized codes that record the patient's diagnosis and treatment information. Cancer registrars are responsible for compiling and reporting data from all the medical facilities that treat a patient. Registrars follow all data collection rules.

Job Requirements

Associate's Degree

Cancer Registry Management certification

At a minimum already enrolled in program with expection of getting CTR credtenials within 3 years of hire date

Registered Health Information Technology (RHIT) and/or

Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR), or enrolled in an accredited Cancer Registry Management (CRM) Program. If enrolled or completed CRM program, then a CTR credential is required within 3 years of hire date.

Computer knowledge (Basic, Word, Excel), ability to learn quickly and work independently.

Good oral and written communication skills with ability to manage deadlines and work load

Basic experience requirements are satisfied through the RHIT and/or CTR certification eligibility requirements.

Job Responsibilities

Abstracts cancer registry data including coding and entering patient specific demographic and medical information into the cancer registry database via manual entry, database linkage, and computer interfaces. Reviews and interprets complex diagnostic and treatment data utilizing standards and practices defined by ACoS, CoC the FORDS manual, SEER Multiple Primary and Histology Rules, Collaborative Stage Data Collection System, state registries and other regulatory agency requirements. Assigns the appropriate ICD-O codes for abstracted cases. Utilizes all available data to assign appropriate AJCC staging and/or other cancer staging to each case.

Conducts case finding to maintain a complete cancer registry database. Identifies patients with malignant and benign reportable conditions, according to established guidelines, through case finding practices to include review of pathology and cytology reports.

Performs registry data quality review to ensure accurate, consistent, and complete data, running edits and correcting data, verifying accuracy of staging by the managing physician and re-reviewing abstracted cases at the time of completion. Ensures 100% abstraction of cancer cases within 6 months of discharge with fewer than 2 errors per abstract.

Participates with Tumor Board/Cancer Conference coordination and participation. Maintains knowledge of CoC standards.

Other Job-Related Information

Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, ICD-10 and ICD-O Coding.

Skills necessary: Organizational skills a must, Good Time Management, Attention to detail, Ability to prioritize, Excellent Communication and written skills along with ability to multi task. Analytical skills necessary to interpret, understand and analyze pertinent data from medical records.

Ability to work remotely with occassional travel into the office.

Always demonstrates high moral and ethical standards with willingness to work as a team to meet monthly department goals.
