The Personal Support Specialist (PSS) provides direct, hands-on care and daily living assistance to clients in their homes or residential settings. The PSS helps individuals maintain independence, safety, comfort, and quality of life by offering compassionate, person-centered support aligned with each client’s care plan.
Key ResponsibilitiesDirect Client Care
- Assist clients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and mobility.
- Support Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) such as meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, and errands.
- Provide assistance with ambulation, transfers, and the safe use of mobility devices.
- Offer medication reminders as permitted by state regulations.
- Observe and report changes in a client’s physical, emotional, or cognitive condition.
Client Support & Engagement
- Promote client independence, dignity, and choice through respectful, individualized care.
- Provide companionship, social engagement, and emotional support.
- Encourage participation in therapeutic, recreational, or community-based activities.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all care plans, agency policies, and state regulations.
- Maintain a clean, safe environment for clients and report hazards promptly.
- Use proper body mechanics and follow infection control procedures.
- Document care activities accurately and in a timely manner.
Communication & Teamwork
- Communicate regularly with supervisors regarding client status and needs.
- Collaborate with healthcare team members, family members, and caregivers.
- Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and quality service at all times.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Completion of a state-approved Personal Support Specialist (PSS) training program.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification (as required).
- Ability to lift, transfer, and assist clients safely.
- Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and compassion.
- Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license (if required by the position).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform repetitive tasks.
- Ability to lift up to [X] pounds and assist with client transfers.
Work Environment
- Client homes, residential care facilities, or community settings.
