Role Description
We are seeking a hands-on, strategic Chief Financial Officer to lead the financial and operational backbone of our early-stage venture capital firm. As a key member of the leadership team, you will oversee all aspects of fund administration, financial reporting, compliance, and internal operations. The ideal candidate thrives in a lean, fast-paced environment and can translate complex financial data into actionable insights for our investment team and LPs. This is a full-time on-site role based in Palo Alto or San Francisco, CA.
Key Responsibilities
Fund Administration & Accounting
- Manage day-to-day fund accounting, including capital calls, distributions, and management fee calculations, working in conjunction with our third-party fund administrator.
- Prepare quarterly and annual financial statements and partner capital statements.
- Oversee the annual audit process and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors, portfolio company CFOs, and tax preparers.
- Maintain the firm's internal books, budgeting, and corporate cash flow forecasting.
Investor Relations & Reporting
- Act as a primary point of contact for LPs regarding financial inquiries and reporting.
- Develop and distribute high-quality quarterly financial LP reports, including portfolio valuations and performance metrics (IRR, TVPI, DPI).
- Support fundraising efforts for future funds by preparing data rooms materials, due diligence questionnaires (DDQs), and responding to prospective investors’ questions.
Portfolio Monitoring & Valuation
- Monitor the financial health and runway of portfolio companies, providing strategic guidance to founders as needed.
- Manage the firm’s portfolio tracking systems and lead the quarterly valuation process.
Operations, Compliance & Risk
- Work closely with the Company's Chief Compliance Officer (CCO), ensuring adherence to SEC/regulatory requirements and internal policies.
- Manage firm-wide operations, including HR, payroll, benefits, IT security, and vendor relationships.
- Negotiate and manage the firm’s insurance policies (D&O, E&O) and legal service agreements.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, or Accounting; CPA or MBA preferred.
- Experience: 7 years of progressive financial or operational leadership, with at least 3-5 years specifically in Venture Capital or Private Equity fund management.
- Technical Skills: Deep expertise in Excel, fund accounting software, cap table management software (Carta), and GAAP for investment companies. Familiarity with modern G&A stack (Rippling, Ramp, etc.) and Agentic AI tools (e.g. Claude Cowork)
- Analytical Rigor: Strong ability to build complex financial models and conduct investment-level sensitivity analysis.
- Soft Skills: Exceptional communication skills, collaborative attitude, and a "no task too small" mentality essential for a small team.
