Non-Exempt, FT Evening Position

General Summary:

Performs custodial tasks and assists with nursing duties in caring for residents, including psychiatric and rehabilitative residents. Performs direct and indirect resident care activities according to established policies and procedures, observes and reports changes in resident conditions and maintains a safe and clean resident and environment. Works under the supervision of a nurse and is certified to administer medications.


Essential Functions:

  • Assisted Living
    • Knowledgeable of resident rights and ensures atmosphere which allows for privacy, dignity, and well-being of all residents in a safe, secure, abuse-free environment, assuring resident safety.
    • Gives report with outgoing shift and oncoming shift to ensure the unit is left in good condition.
    • Accompanies residents to appointments, as directed.
    • Participates in and contributes to interdisciplinary care conferences.
    • Possesses a genuine interest and concern for geriatric and disabled persons.
  • Medication Aide
    • Administer routine medications as directed by RN.
    • Follows the Five Rights – right person, right drug, right dose, right time, and right route.
    • Charts medication(s) given on resident's record.
  • Assisting and Caring for Others
    • Assists in the preparation for admission, transfer and discharge procedures.
    • Provides morning and evening care, which may include bed bath, shower or whirlpool, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, back rubs, peri-care dressing, changing bed linen, cleaning bedside stand, straightening room and other general care as necessary throughout the day.
    • Assists in providing postmortem care.
    • Assists RN in treatment procedures.
    • Ensures residents are dressed properly and assists, as necessary. Ensures that used clothing is properly stored in bedside stand or on hangers in closet. Ensures that all residents are clean and dry at all times.
    • Prepares residents for meals; serves and removes food trays and assists with meals or feeds residents, if necessary.
    • Distributes drinking water and other nourishments to residents.
    • Answers residents’ call lights, anticipates residents’ needs and makes rounds to assigned residents.
    • Assists residents with handling and care of clothing and other personal property (including dentures, glasses, contact lenses, hearing aids and prosthetic devices).
    • Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationship with residents, family members and other facility staff while assuring confidentiality of resident information.
  • Communicating with Supervisors, Peers or Subordinates
    • Notifies appropriate licensed staff when resident complains of pain.
    • Checks for reddened areas or skin breakdown and reports to RN or LPN.
    • Reports and, when appropriate, records any changes observed in condition or behavior of residents and unusual incidents.
    • Must be able to follow directions, both oral and written, and work cooperatively with other staff members.
    • Attends annual review and department in-services, as scheduled.
  • Making Decision and Solving Problems
    • Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion.
  • Safety
    • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
    • Turns and positions residents as ordered and/or as needed, making sure no rough surfaces are in direct contact with the body. Lifts and turns with proper and safe body mechanics and with available resources.
    • Maintains personal health in order to prevent absence from work due to health problems.
  • Coordinating the work and activities of others
    • Assists in resident socialization activities on the unit.
  • Getting/Documenting/Recording information
    • Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, and blood pressure.
    • Must have the ability to acquire knowledge of and develop skills in basic nursing procedures and simple documenting.
  • Organizing, Planning, and Prioritizing work
    • Performs all aspects of resident care in an environment that optimizes resident safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
    • Checks unit for adequate linen. Folds neatly and arranges linen in linen closet (if applicable). Cleans linen cart. Provides clean linen and clothing. Makes beds.
    • Transports residents to and from various departments, as requested.
    • Attends in-service education programs, as assigned, to learn new treatments, procedures, developmental skills, etc.
    • Completes annual education requirements.
    • Maintains regulatory requirements.
    • Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.

Education and Experience:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Current Certification as a Nurse Aide with the State of Nebraska.
  • Must be certified as a Medication Aide-40 hour in the State of Nebraska.

Regulatory Requirements:

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) within three (3) months of hire date
