Job Description

Employees in this position perform a wide variety of duties related to the care, supervision, mentoring, advocacy, and recovery support of program clients. Individuals in this position work under the supervision of a qualified supervisor, counselor, and/or nursing staff as members of a treatment team.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides supervision of the daily activities of clients in residential programs from a recovery-oriented perspective.
  • With appropriate supervision, records individual case information in client records.
  • With appropriate supervision, uses a trauma informed, person-centered, and strengths-based framework to provide non-clinical services to program clients such as substance use education, goal setting, problem solving, and decision making.
  • Participates in group counseling sessions with senior counseling staff or appropriate supervisory staff.
  • Serves as a role model for program clients using lived experience where applicable, and assists them in learning about health, wellness, recovery, and age-appropriate daily living skills always building from a respectful, trusting, empathetic, collaborative, and mutual.
  • Identify and link clients to appropriate resources within the community.
  • With appropriate training and following chain of custody regulations, employee will perform urinalysis of clients to ensure they are alcohol and drug free per TCHS policy.
  • Required to meet and maintain TCHS Approved Driver Qualifications per policy number 100.007.52 and transport TCHS person served in any agency vehicle
  • Performs other reasonable and related duties as requested by supervisory or administrative staff.

Minimum Training and Experience

Requires a high school diploma or GED and a valid Florida driver's license. Will work under the supervision of at least a bachelor’s level practitioner and will complete in-service training in the treatment of substance use disorders, patients’ rights, aggression control, HIV, infections control and other required trainings within 90-days of starting employment.

The incumbent will be a member of the multidisciplinary team and may utilize life experiences to provide recovery support as assigned and be able to recognize the signs and symptoms associated with substance use and dependence. The Peer Specialist will be familiar with substance use rules and regulations, confidentiality, twelve step and other recovery concepts, clinical record documentation requirements and rights of Person Served. Must be able to respond to special circumstances and help peers manage crises such as emergencies, suicide, intense psychological distress, and any other threats to safety in the program environment. Incumbent will have completed all mandatory training required by Tri-County and obtained certification as a Certified Peer Specialist by the Florida Certification Board within one (1) year of initiating this position.
