Position Summary
The Senior Accountant actively participates in the financial accounting operations of the electric cooperative, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records in compliance with industry regulations, GAAP, and cooperative principles. This position drives process improvements and supports strategic decision-making through financial reporting and analysis.
Essential Job Functions
Financial Accounting & Reporting
- Oversee general ledger operations, month-end and year-end closing processes. - Prepare and review complex journal entries, financial statements, reports, and supporting schedules. - Ensure compliance with GAAP, FERC, RUS, and cooperative regulatory requirements. - Prepare reports for the Board of Directors, management, lenders, and auditors.
- Support power cost adjustments, rate changes and their impact on financial instruments.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Assist with budget development, implementation, and monitoring. - Conduct variance analysis and present financial insights to leadership. - Support long-term financial planning, including capital and operational budgets.
Treasury Management
- Prepare and approve ACH and wires. - Balance management and reporting in relationship to cash flows and long-term debt.
Regulatory & Audit Compliance
- Assist with coordination of annual financial audit and oversee preparation of audit materials. - Ensure timely filing of state, federal, and industry reports. - Monitor internal controls and recommend enhancements when needed.
Position Requirements
Education & Experience: - Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. - 4 years of progressive accounting experience. - Experience in utility, cooperative, or regulated industry strongly preferred. Knowledge & Skills: - Strong understanding of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting. - Familiarity with FERC/RUS accounting practices beneficial. - Proficient in accounting software (NISC experience preferred) and Microsoft Excel. - Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. - Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Work Environment
- Primarily office-based with occasional travel for conferences or training. - Must maintain confidentiality and practice professional discretion.
