JOB SUMMARY
The Equipment Manager provides leadership and direction for the safe, reliable and cost-effective performance of container terminal equipment. Includes responsibility to coordinate maintenance needs and parts required with Maintenance Contractor.
NATURE AND SCOPE
Due to the nature of our business, work shifts may fluctuate depending upon vessel arrival schedules and operational requirements. Must be available to work weekends, day and night shift and long hours (up to 12 hours per shift), and adapt to changes in work schedules as needed. Work schedule may include “flip” in shifts (day and night shift within the same day or week).
The Equipment Manager shall lead by example in the workplace by always correctly wearing the required PPE and enforcing the same standards in the workplace for all visitors, vendors, colleagues and contractors.
The incumbent’s responsibilities require knowledge of all relative maintenance systems, workflows, processes and associated planning tools for the proper direction and supervision of the overall maintenance planning and execution process.
It is essential that the incumbent be knowledgeable of equipment technology, terminology, various equipment types and repair techniques, all of which must conform to applicable standards. This knowledge is critical to allow the oversight of the management of parts, materials and supplies inventory, purchasing, cost accounting and preparation of reports and applicable documentation.
The elements of leadership, analysis and the capability for timely, clear, and decisive action are essential to perform the duties of this position.
A good working knowledge of labor contract, administration and a demonstrated leadership capability are essential to this labor-intensive department. Maintain a thorough knowledge of applicable labor agreements and local working rules thus enabling proper supervision and understanding of the labor environment which in turn provides the ability/necessity to engage in related issues as necessary.
Assist in ensuring the department provides and maintains a safe work environment, both within the department’s immediate workforce, but also throughout the overall facility, its equipment and associated surroundings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Provides direction to the maintenance contractor and/or contracted maintenance technicians including rostering to ensure adequate resource availability for business needs. The incumbent provides on-call support and may need to cover for planned or unplanned workplace absences.
- Works closely with other business unit managers including Operations Teams for the preparation of equipment maintenance and approves equipment maintenance expenditure within budget and authority limit.
- Works with maintenance contractor to build an effective proactive maintenance schedule with detailed work instructions for all equipment to reduce downtime and life cycle costs on all assets/equipment.
- Ensure that adequate inventory is maintained, and active efforts are in place to ensure that inventory levels are minimized while still ensuring that necessary and anticipated spare parts are always immediately available.
- Ensures up-to-date information and knowledge on equipment is retained, improves and modifies equipment design, in order to improve safety, reliability, efficiency or life cycle cost.
- Acts as a tiebreaker in resolving conflict or competing priorities between maintenance contractor and TraPac Operations Teams.
- Coordinates the required equipment needs of the client and/or TraPac operational departments with the contracted labor workforce management.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- A university degree in electrical/electronic, mechanical or mechatronic engineering or related field. With some post qualification experience or significant practical experience advancing career from a relevant craft through to supervisor or management position (10 years technical experience, 2 years management experience).
- Additional studies in asset management, business or related is considered an advantage.
- Certified Reliability Leader (CRL) is considered an advantage.
- Some understanding of engineering fundamentals applicable to container handling equipment, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and automation systems.
- Practical knowledge of general safety, health and environmental issues
- Experience working with a union workforce an ability to work in the bargaining agreement
- Advanced Proficiency and Computer skills for MS Office suite
- Ability to work outdoors at height, in confined/restricted spaces and out of normal hours
- Ability to occasionally travel domestically and/or internationally
- Experience within a demanding 24/7 work environment
- Cost consciousness when making decisions
- Experience and training specifically related to container handling equipment
- Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), preferably eMaint
- Knowledge and experience with best practice asset management methodologies including Preventative and Predictive Maintenance, 5S, LEAN, Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA), Vibration Analysis, Thermography, Tribology etc.
