JOB SUMMARY

This position helps ensure the proper functioning of District transportation operations by organizing and maintaining logistical needs including establishing, scheduling, and routing cost-effective, safe, and efficient routes while effectively communicating and assisting in resolving issues or other department concerns. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Interact professionally and cooperatively with staff, administrators, students, parents/guardians, and patrons within designated boundaries of authority and confidentiality including answering telephones, taking messages, greeting and directing visitors, resolving conflicts, and disseminating information, etc.
  • Respond to requests from any interested person with information concerning routes, stops, schedules, loads, rules and regulations, and other facts that may be appropriate.
  • Secure qualified substitute drivers and other transportation personnel as needed/directed to cover routes in the absence of regular drivers. Instruct sub-drivers on routing, schedules, and other factors necessary to perform efficiently.
  • Track and assign field trips to drivers and transportation paraeducators per the guidelines set forth in their bargaining agreements and in a manner that will maximize district resources while providing maximum service to all.
  • Assist management in maintaining transportation software programs (trip requesting, GPS, parent notification, etc.)
  • Work with school personnel with trip cost estimates and assist in charter coverage as directed.
  • Assist in the preparation of routes for early dismissal/late arrival days, including those with other districts, as needed and assign drivers and/or students to those routes and/or drivers. 
  • Utilizing a computerized routing program, design and maintain assigned routes and shuttles within prescribed time and efficiency requirements while equalizing loads, and ensuring safe transportation of students.  
  • Create and maintain Student Health Care folders, bus route books, student lists as needed/directed for area(s) of responsibility. 
  • Work with nursing and special services personnel on health issues of students assigned to the routes being supported by the position.
  • Accept bus trouble calls; assist in coordinating mechanics, replacement buses, and drivers to meet needs.
  • Provide backup routing support for other area(s) not primarily assigned.  
  • Provide customer service to staff and community. 
  • Maintain inventory of necessary supplies for special needs and/or general education buses (seat belts, car seats, safety harnesses, 1st aid supplies, etc.)
  • Coordinate with staff and outside agencies/vendors to ensure district and/or student needs are met including advising building officials of route changes, bus changes, driver changes, late arrivals/departures, etc.
  • Prepare, compose, and process various district documents including standard letters, memoranda, reports, etc. independently with little or no instruction in an accurate manner as requested.
  • Create and maintain a variety of files (computer and hard copy including confidential files) to ensure accurate and up-to-date information is available.
  • Provide emergency relief school bus driving as directed.
  • Monitor compliance with state pupil transportation guidelines and other applicable rules and regulations as assigned.
  • Work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as department/job duties require.
  • Assist with planning and scheduling and attend department meetings and trainings as required.
  • Assist in any special projects/additional duties assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Minimum of three (3) years' experience driving a school bus with prior dispatch/routing experience preferred.
  • Maintain a valid state driver’s license including a Class B CDL with appropriate endorsements (or willing to obtain a Class B CDL within 6 months of being employed). 
  • Possess and maintain State of Washington School Bus Driver’s Authorization to include but not limited to a valid Medical Examiners Certificate certifying medical ability to drive a school bus, First Aid/CPR card, WSP Fingerprint clearance, and the ability to periodically undergo and pass a random drug test.
  • Skilled in the use of the Microsoft Office/XP suite of products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Google suite of products (Gmail, Drive, Docs, etc.)
  • Have experience with transportation mapping and routing procedures preferred.
  • Have sufficient command of the English language, both oral and written, to communicate with students, parents, district staff members, and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their related activities.
  • Have experience and demonstrated ability to work professionally and cooperatively with staff, administrators, students, parents/guardians, and patrons within designated boundaries of authority and confidentiality.
  • Be able to handle many complex duties at the same time demonstrating leadership and organizational skills, while working calmly and effectively under pressure and meeting deadlines in a timely and efficient manner.

This is an office job. The employee is confined to a work area; required to have precise control of fingers and hand movements; experiences constant interruptions and inflexible deadlines; must be able to work at a computer monitor for prolonged periods; and must be able to crouch, crawl, bend, kneel, and lift/move objects such as files, boxes, etc up to 50 lbs., if necessary. The employee is required to deal with distraught and/or angry persons and may be exposed to infectious diseases carried by children. The noise level in the work environment is acceptable to this particular environment and can vary depending upon daily activity but will remain within acceptable ranges. 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT and Salary:

As outlined by and in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) of the Mead Office & Support  Professionals (PSE) and Policies and Procedures of Mead School District. A typical school year consists of 260 days plus 10 holidays, September through June of each school year.  The individual number of days may vary by position as defined within the CBA. 

 

The salary range for the position is: Min $23.19– Max $27.88. Salary placement will be at step 1 on the scale for the position unless otherwise noted within the contract. Each employee shall accumulate twelve (12) days of sick leave per year. An employee employed less than a full work year shall be entitled to a proportionate part of the sick leave allowance.  A maximum of three (3) days of annual leave are provided for all employees based on the employee’s scheduled employment hours per day to be used for an absence during work hours, or to be accumulated for the purpose of cash out. 260 Day/Year-Round employees are also eligible for vacation accrual per the collective bargaining agreement.

 

Employees anticipated to work more than 630 hours per year will be eligible for Benefits through the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB) Standard benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, and Long-Term Disability.  Positions anticipated to work 70 hours or more per month for at least 5 months over a 12-month period are eligible for Retirement through the State Department of Retirement Services.
