Reports to: Transportation Supervisor/Director and/or Superintendent of Schools
General Summary:
Responsible for the maintenance, service and recording of bus data, and maintaining all school buses in operating condition in conformity with school, local, county, state, and federal requirements. Also responsible for mechanical maintenance on lawn mowers, tractors, snow removal equipment, school maintenance vehicles.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain all vehicles used to transport students in accordance with the standards established by the Michigan State Police Department, Michigan Department of Transportation, and Michigan Department of Education.
- Maintain a maintenance schedule for all school buses and perform the preventative maintenance according to the schedule.
- Perform repairs and supervise repairs and improvements on all fleet vehicles. Specifically: Diagnose and perform basic mechanical repairs to all vehicles, including buses and light and medium duty trucks, including fuel and exhaust systems, chassis, drive train, suspension, electrical, cooling system, hydraulic and air brakes, and diesel and gasoline engines. Complete front end alignments repairs on steering and suspension systems.
- Operate school bus or other automotive equipment and conducts road tests to ensure repairs are satisfactorily performed.
- Advise in the purchase of fuel, fuel supplies, parts, and tools.
- Prepare monthly reports of service and maintenance activities for the Transportation Supervisor.
- Prepare an annual report of the condition of the buses and make recommendations for the replacement of vehicles based on the service records.
- Demonstrate high standards of safety in all work connected areas.
- Assist and make recommendations for service in the rescue of stalled or disabled school vehicles.
- Must be responsible for protecting school system property and securing all buildings and yards under transportation control.
- Must stay certified in all State required areas to maintain classifications.
- Must be able to gas weld and electric weld.
- Assume all other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School graduate
- 18 years or older
- Possess and maintain CDL (B) license with P, S (preferred) and Air Brake endorsements
- Maintains a high level of confidentiality
- Maintains a high level of personal and professional flexibility
- Demonstrated dependability with minimum absenteeism.
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
- Evidence of high standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity in personal and professional manner.
