PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Responsible for the maintaining and repairing all district fleet vehicles, Gas & Diesel engines, and heavy equipment

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent
  • Possess current Texas Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) or willing to obtained within 90 days of employment
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License, a good driving record, and proof of insurance on vehicle used to travel to district
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting and background check
  • Possess or willing to obtain within 90 days a Texas State inspection license

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to diagnose and repair fleet vehicles, Gas & Diesel engines, and heavy equipment
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment
  • Able to repair hydraulic, and airbrake systems
  • Acceptable driving record

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a vehicle mechanic
  • Experience in repair and maintenance of diesel and gasoline operated vehicles and equipment

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Perform required maintenance to include periodic checks on tires, oil, gasoline, propane, coolant, grease, plugs, brake shoes, exhausts, lights, safety equipment, and steering systems
  • Follow PM schedule and perform preventive maintenance on fleet vehicles assigned by Supervisor
  • Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures
  • Maintain vehicle records, work orders, and parts use
  • Report and consult with Supervisor on major repair problems
  • Perform road calls and on-call phone duties as required
  • Maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance and work orders
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties appropriately
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to Transportation Supervisor immediately
  • Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles
  • May do welding and minor body work
  • Help keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition
  • Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service
  • Works irregular hours as needed
  • Drive a school bus with or without students on board
  • Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
  • Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job

Equipment Used:

  • Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drills, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jacks and lift equipment. Fleet vehicles and equipment
  • Communication equipment – radio communication equipment, cellular telephone

Mental Demands:

  • Ability to concentrate, communicate, interpret procedures, reason, understand verbal instructions, differentiate, memorize, read, coordinate, instruct, and maintain emotional control under stress.

  • Work with frequent interruptions

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift and/or carry heavy weight (45 pounds or more), sit, stand, walk short distances, climb ladders, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, pull, push, reach, hear, speak, maintain visual acuity, distinguish colors, and drive a bus on a daily bases
  • Climb stairs and/or ramps, crawling, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity, distinguishing colors, driving, traveling.
  • Occasional: Lifting, moderate, 15-44 pounds; carrying, moderate, 15-44 pounds

Environmental Factors:

  • Ability to work inside/outside in temperature extremes, slippery surfaces, noise, chemical exposure (asbestos, fumes, vapors, gases, dust, smoke, etc.); works around moving machinery with moving parts, moving objects, or moving vehicles; works alone, and may experience unusual fatigue (when breaking down vehicle tires)
  • Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration
  • Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.), work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces, work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours
