Bus Aide

Compensation: $14.51 per hour (up to 6hrs per day)

Summary

The School Bus Aide is responsible for assisting the bus driver in ensuring the safe and orderly transportation of students to and from school and school-related activities. This position supports students during loading, unloading, and transit—particularly those with special needs or behavioral challenges—by providing supervision, assistance, and care. The aide helps maintain a safe and respectful environment on the bus, ensures students are seated and secured as required, and assists with emergency procedures when necessary. This role requires effective communication, physical stamina, and the ability to respond calmly and appropriately in various situations. The School Bus Aide plays a key role in promoting student safety and supporting the overall transportation team.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Demonstrate aptitude and competence for assigned responsibilities.
• Ability to work effectively with school personnel and students in a diverse school community.
• Solid record of punctuality.
• Must be physically compatible of helping students into their seats.
• Must pass a background check and drug screening.

Desired Requirements:

• Experience working with At-Risk students.
• First Aid and CPR Certification.
• Individual who has Non-violent crisis training (CPI)

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Know the proper use of securing devices for safety restraints, wheelchairs, and seat belts.
• Assist the driver in the proper loading and unloading of passengers.
• Maintain student discipline.
• Supervise and assist students in transit.
• Report any concerns regarding students to the driver and to the appropriate building staff.
• Know the school bus evacuation procedures and be physically capable to evacuate students in an emergency.
• Learn the bus route and provide route information that includes driver directions for the best way to reach a location, for a substitute or newly assigned bus driver.

While performing the duties of a school bus aide, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, reach, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The position involves assisting students on and off the bus, which may require climbing steps multiple times throughout the day and supporting students with limited mobility. The employee must be able to assist in lifting or transferring students or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and provide physical support in emergency situations, including evacuations. Effective verbal communication and hearing are essential for interacting with students, the driver, and others. Visual ability (with or without correction) is also necessary for monitoring student safety and behavior. The work is performed in and around a moving vehicle and includes exposure to varying weather conditions, vehicle noise, and possible bodily fluids. The employee must be physically and mentally capable of maintaining student safety, managing challenging behavior, and responding promptly to emergency situations.
