TITLE: Automotive Mechanic

REPORTS TO: Mechanic Supervisor

 


JOB GOAL

To keep the district’s trucks and buses operating so that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate a variety of equipment including electronic and diagnostic tools.
  • Freon recovery machine, tire changers, grinders, steam cleaners, hoist, jacks, torches, welding equipment, and a variety of power and hand tools.
  • Conduct periodic mechanical safety inspections as instructed, test drive, and insure repairs are complete and correct.
  • Process work orders and maintenance records and time worked and material used on every unit.
  • Document on each work order a detailed description of repairs made.
  • Maintain work area, equipment, and tools in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  • Respond to service calls and perform emergency repairs as needed.
  • Perform related duties and assumes other duties assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor, Transportation Supervisor and/or Superintendent

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Valid Mississippi Commercial Driver’s License with a Passenger and School Bus endorsement.

Knowledge of the working components of passenger vehicles, light trucks, and tractors including HVAC, engines, electronics transmissions, and differentials

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or Equivalency

 

  • LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with staff members.

 

  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as bus parts and chemical containers. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

  • OTHER SKILLS

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in transportation field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and school and community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

 

  • WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical bus equipment. The employee may frequently work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, gas fumes and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.
