Position Description: Purpose
This position will help bring a conceptual design into real-world applications. They translate technical ideas into clear, precise drawings and help ensure projects are built to the requested specifications. Drafters typically collaborate with Engineers to streamline communication and reduce the risks of errors in design implementation.
Essential Functions*
Provide technical and mechanical design support to project teams
Prepare drawings of test equipment to be manufactured from layouts, models, or sketches
Work with fabricators/machinists to assure the equipment meets the specifications and needs of the project team
Coordinate project schedule changes and scope of work with project teams

Other Duties and Responsibilities (Non-Essential Functions)
Assist in the development of proposals and plans for research programs
Represent the customer and TRC to external contacts
Interpret technical standards as they apply to drawings
Interpret and understand technical drawings
Compare technical drawings to physical parts
Prepare 2-D and/or 3-D CAD drawings or computer modules of mechanical systems, structures, parts, or equipment
Interpret, organize, review, and revise large, detailed technical drawing packages
Work with large technical drawing databases
Create drawings or models that include complex design features that require considerable drafting skill to visualize and portray
Use mathematical formulas to draw contours or to compute weights, center of gravity, load capacities, dimensions, quantities of material, etc.
Support TRC Inc.s Quality and EH&S (Environmental, Health, and Safety) efforts
Qualifications
Four-year bachelors degree in an engineering discipline or a two-year associates degree in an engineering/other technology discipline that included mechanical design and drafting coursework is preferred. If a bachelors or associate degree as described are not applicable, recognized certification(s) and/or minimum five years of related experience or eight years demonstrated expertise in applied mechanical design
General knowledge of mechanical components or equipment
General knowledge of electronics components as they relate to technical drawings
Working knowledge of fabrication and machining practices as they related to design
Advanced CAD skills such as 3-D, incorporating CAD output with other software programs, etc.
Skilled at dimensions, tolerances, fits, fabrication techniques, and standard parts to use in manufacturing the equipment
Basic computer skills with required proficiency in the use of computers and associated software programs as they relate to CAD
Excellent communication skills
