JOB TITLE: Bus Aide

REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor/Director

PRIMARY PURPOSE: 

A Bus Aide assists the school bus driver in providing safe, orderly, and efficient transportation for students to and from school and school-related activities. The Bus Aide helps supervise student behavior, assists students with special needs, and ensures compliance with safety procedures. 

Education/Certification:

• High school diploma or GED preferred

Qualifications:

• Ability to work effectively with children and adolescents
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
• Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in emergencies
• Ability to lift, bend, stoop, and assist students physically when necessary
• Must pass criminal background check and drug screening as required by state law

Experience:

• Experience working with children or students with special needs
• CPR and First Aid certification
• Experience in school transportation or childcare settings

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist students when boarding and exiting the bus
• Maintain student safety and appropriate behavior while the bus is in operation
• Help supervise loading and unloading at schools and bus stops
• Assist students with disabilities or special needs, including securing wheelchairs, seat belts, safety vests, or child restraint systems
• Follow Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or transportation plans when applicable
• Communicate behavioral or safety concerns to the bus driver and school administration
• Assist with emergency evacuation drills and emergency situations
• Ensure aisles and emergency exits remain clear
• Provide support during field trips and extracurricular transportation as assigned
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student information
• Complete incident reports or documentation as required
• Attend required training sessions and safety meetings

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• None

Working Conditions:

• School buses and school transportation settings
• Exposure to traffic, weather conditions, and moderate noise levels
• Split-shift schedule may be required (morning and afternoon routes)

Mental Demands:

• Maintain control under stress. 

Physical Demands:

• Ability to climb bus steps repeatedly
• Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods
• Ability to lift or assist students and mobility equipment when required
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
